Linarejos lies in the heart of the Sierra de la Culebra, designated a regional hunting reserve in 1973. The village brings together several points of interest for a stay: schematic rock art, a Bronze Age site, a natural viewpoint and a parish church with a name of its own. You can choose to focus on archaeological sites, the landscape or local culture.

Rock Art and Archaeological Sites

The Covacha de Portillón, also known as the Covacha del Portillón, is a small quartzite cave near Peña Mira, the highest peak in the Sierra de la Culebra. On 25 June 1985, it was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category of rock art.

The cave contains schematic rock art: anthropomorphic, anchor-shaped and cross-shaped figures, as well as bar and line forms in reddish and orange hues. Anthropomorphic refers to human-like shapes; alongside them are geometric-looking and linear motifs. This lets you view the rock art through its shapes and colours, rather than reducing it to a single representation.

Canchal de Melendro is a Bronze Age site with rock art in Linarejos. The Covacha del Portillón can be seen from the Melendro shelter. The two sites are thus linked by a direct line of sight, although they are classified differently: Melendro is described as a Bronze Age site, while the Covacha is a small quartzite cave with schematic motifs. “Quartzite” identifies the rock the cave is made of, whereas “Bronze Age” refers to the historical classification of the Melendro site.

The dates also serve different purposes: the Bronze Age refers to the historical classification of Canchal de Melendro; 25 June 1985 is the date on which the Covacha was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural. The two sites therefore bring together an archaeological period and a later protected status.

Landscape, Church and Events

Las Portillas is a natural viewpoint overlooking the Sierra de la Culebra, at the boundary between Linarejos and Aliste. The focus here is on the landscape, while the viewpoint also lies at the named boundary. The parish church in Linarejos is called Iglesia de Nª Sª de la Purificación. If you want to explore more than rock art, these places offer different ways to focus on the landscape and local culture.

The cultural week “La Murujona” is associated with 17 August in Linarejos. Falling in summer, 17 August gives the cultural week a clear seasonal setting.
