Two sections of the GR 14 give Gamones a clear role in your hiking plans: Stage 24 ends in the village, while Stage 25 begins there beside the church. The village centre also features examples of traditional craftsmanship and architecture. You can therefore get to know Gamones through both its walking routes and the tangible traces of traditional work, architecture and religious art.
Comparing two GR 14 stages
Stage 24 connects Torregamones and Gamones over approximately 3 km and ends in the village. Stage 25 begins there beside the church, leads to Badilla and covers 8.2 km; it is listed as taking about two hours. This lets you compare a shorter connection with a longer stage and its approximate duration.
Landscapes before and after Gamones
The sections also differ in scenery. Before Gamones, Stage 24 passes through a corridor bordered by a stone wall and lined with large holm oaks; in the summer months, they provide welcome shade. Stage 25 follows the left bank of the Arroyo de la Palla through a riverside woodland of ash trees, willows and poplars, along with a diverse shrub layer. It also passes the Molino Moralo. If you choose your route based on landscape, you can compare the holm oak corridor before Gamones with the overgrown riverbank along Stage 25.
Craftsmanship and architecture in the village
In the centre of the village is a potro de hacer varas de arados, a traditional device for making plough handles. The moulds for these are carved into an exposed rock face. The Fuente Vieja is a traditional well with an attached stone basin that was once used for washing clothes. The Puente de la Avena is a simple example of the pragmatic building style of the Sayago region.
A walking tour of Gamones village centre focuses on civic architecture. The term draws attention to secular architecture and distinguishes this tour from the religious art and history sites. The parish church, Iglesia parroquial de la PurĂsima ConcepciĂłn, has wall paintings on the epistle side of the first bay of the nave, as well as a small scene on the reveal of the triumphal arch.
Festivals and other local points of interest
The festival of San Marcos is held every year on 25 April and includes a pilgrimage to the Ermita de Santa Eulalia. On 13 June, Gamones celebrates a festival in honour of Saint Anthony of Padua. If you would like to plan your visit around either occasion, check the date for your travel year.
The Parque Natural de los Arribes del Duero is one of Gamones’ natural attractions. A ceramics workshop also forms part of the local cultural scene. Nature and ceramics thus add further perspectives to the themes of walking routes and architecture.
