Coreses brings together two distinct areas to explore: nature watching at the Lagunas de Coreses and a local history dating back to the first half of the 10th century. When choosing a stay to suit your interests, you can consider whether to focus on wetlands and wildlife watching or on the town’s historical development. Both themes give Coreses a clear identity and can be explored as distinct areas of interest.

Wetlands and nature watching

The Lagunas de Coreses form a wetland complex within the municipality, comprising more than fifty former gravel pits. This means the focus is not on a single lagoon, but on a complex of several former extraction sites.

Three periods of the year are important for birdwatching: the breeding season, migration and wintering. During these periods, the lagoons host significant numbers of waterbirds and marsh birds. Numbers can vary seasonally, so the time of year is an important distinction between the different observation periods. If you are also choosing when to travel based on this nature theme, you can weigh up the three periods.

The lagoons are also well suited to observing dragonflies and damselflies. This adds another group of animals to the focus on waterbirds and marsh birds, offering nature enthusiasts a second specific area of interest. The wetlands can therefore be explored both for their birdlife and for smaller animals.

Local history and buildings

The present-day settlement of Coreses grew out of settlements established by Leonese monarchs after they conquered areas under Muslim rule. In the first half of the 10th century, Coreses was resettled with Mozarabs brought from Coria. These Mozarabs gave the town its name. Their place of origin and the naming of the town are thus closely linked to this early history.

The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la AsunciĂłn dates from the 18th century, and the Palacio del MarquĂ©s de Villagodio from the 19th century. Together with the early resettlement, these buildings mark different points in time: the history of the settlement in the 10th century is followed by buildings from two later centuries. Anyone looking to trace the town’s history chronologically will find a clear arc here, from the early settlement to the buildings of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Culture and getting there

The RAMÓN ÁLVAREZ Cultural Center has an exhibition area and spaces for Coreses’ cultural program. Exhibitions and the local cultural program thus add another cultural dimension to the town’s historical points of interest. The architectural history and cultural center offer different ways to experience the town: one through the historical context of the church and palace, the other through spaces for exhibitions and cultural activities.

A regular daily bus service connects Coreses with the provincial capital; a taxi service is also available. If you plan to take the bus, check the current timetable before your trip.
