Porto combines protected mountain landscapes with marked trails, waterscapes and a distinctive cultural heritage. The entire municipal area lies within the Parque Natural Lago de Sanabria y Sierras Segundera y de Porto. Those considering Porto for a nature trip will find a range of options here, from glacial lakes and river valleys to hiking trails and the traditional language variety of Portexo.

Mountain Landscapes and Water Define Porto

Most of Porto’s territory is part of the Natura 2000 network as ZEC ES4190105 and ZEPA ES4190009. Its mountain ecosystems include extensive heathland, holly stands, yew forests, active peat bogs, glacial lakes and river springs. These habitats provide refuge for numerous plant and animal species of European interest.

One example is Laguna de la Clara. The RĂo Bibey rises in the mountains of Porto and flows through valleys, gorges, peat bogs and largely unspoilt riverside woodlands. The lake and river show two distinct sides of the natural landscape, without forming a single route.

Trails and Activities Have Distinct Characters

The Trail Running Center (TRC) Porto de Sanabria is a network of marked routes for runners and hikers. Senda nÂş 8 Porto por Val de Sirgas y Val de Inferno passes through glacial valleys and high-mountain landscapes. The Trail Running Center comprises a network of marked routes; Senda nÂş 8 is a single route through glacial valleys and high-mountain landscapes.

The Ruta de los Embalses offers a different perspective. It passes the San Sebastián, San Agustín, Valdesirgas, Puente Porto, Playa, Cárdena, Garandones, Vega de Tera and Vega de Conde reservoirs, and takes in peat bogs, glacial lakes and high-altitude pastures. The municipality recommends using mountain tracks suitable for 4×4 vehicles and mountain bikes, as well as experienced hikers. This information helps distinguish the route from the marked trails of the Trail Running Center, without implying a specific walking time or level of difficulty.

The VĂa Ferrata Porto-Alta Sanabria is a few minutes from the town centre and lies within both the Reserva Natural Fluvial del RĂo Bibey and the Parque Natural Lago de Sanabria y Sierras Segundera y de Porto. Its features include a 46-metre Tibetan bridge, two other suspension bridges and a 160-metre zip line. It is therefore a distinct activity for trip planning, alongside the hiking trails and scenic routes.

The GR-84 Montaña de Sanabria connects some of the comarca’s most representative places. The starting point for a hike in Porto is at the beginning of Calle Cancela. There is a large fountain with a livestock watering trough and parking; no specific route is named from this starting point. As local conditions can change, check the current situation before setting out on your hike.

Portexo and Historic Routes

Portexo is the traditional language variety spoken by the people of Porto for centuries, with clear Galician-Portuguese roots. As a living cultural heritage, it preserves collective memory, traditional occupations, place names and the town’s historical identity. Alongside nature and outdoor activities, it gives a visit to Porto a cultural point of reference.

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is the most important testament to Porto’s historical relationship with the Order of Santiago. The landscape also tells of earlier connections: the Cordel Sanabrés branches off from the historic Cañada Real de la Plata, also known as the Cañada Real Zamorana, and connected Benavente with Porto. It provided access to the summer pastures where cows, sheep, horses and other migrating herds grazed.

When choosing what to focus on, these themes are easy to distinguish: the routes pass through named mountain and waterscapes, while Portexo, the church and the Cordel Sanabrés offer different ways to explore Porto’s language and history.
