Narrow, steep streets shape the medieval layout of Fermoselle’s historic old town. Those interested in the town’s architectural history will find several distinct points of reference: Romanesque churches from different centuries, a protected historic ensemble and the remains of Castillo de Doña Urraca.

Romanesque Churches and History

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción dates back to the 13th century and is Romanesque in style. The Iglesia de Santa Colomba is also Romanesque, but dates from the 12th century. It is located in the upper part of Fermoselle; its cruciform floor plan and round arches give the building distinctive architectural features. Inside is the 11th-century Romanesque wooden carving Cristo del Humilladero. Here, then, you can encounter a building and a carving from different centuries in the same place.

Fermoselle’s historic old town was designated a historic-artistic ensemble in 1974. The remains of Castillo de Doña Urraca are also protected as an asset of special cultural interest. These landmarks give the town’s history a distinctive focus, while the viewpoints direct your gaze beyond the town to the river and the landscape.

Townscape, Views and Nature

Mirador del Torrejón, also known as El Torojón, offers panoramic views over Fermoselle’s town center and the surrounding natural landscape. The ruins of Castillo de Doña Urraca form a viewpoint overlooking the Duero, the Portuguese riverbank and the surrounding landscape. The Duero separates Spain and Portugal. The two viewpoints therefore differ mainly in their focus: one looks over the town center, the other over the river and the opposite bank.

The Arribes del Duero Nature Park lies near Fermoselle. Its rich flora and fauna provide a setting for a range of activities: hiking, cycling and water-based outings. This adds a natural perspective to the historic town center, while recognizing that not all outings are the same kind of excursion.

Hiking, River Trips and Casa del Parque

The two described stages of the GR-14 also lead to different destinations. Stage 31 runs within the municipality of Fermoselle to Fuente de La Noria. Stage 32, the Senda del Duero, leads from Fermoselle into the province of Salamanca and through the Tormes River Canyon. The specific difference is that one stage has a destination within the municipality, while the other follows the Tormes Canyon and crosses into another province.

Trips are offered on the Duero between the walls of its canyons. Guides provide information about the environment, wildlife and customs of the Arribes. Operators and schedules may change, so check current dates and offers before making plans.

The Casa del Parque “Convento de San Francisco” is located in the former Convento de San Francisco in Fermoselle. One of its features is a 15-minute audiovisual presentation, shown regularly, about the region’s nature and ways of life. The Convento garden includes ethnographic displays, fountains and vegetable gardens. Alongside routes and viewpoints, visitors can also learn about nature and regional ways of life.

Wine and Traditional Cuisine

Fermoselle’s wine is associated with its own grape variety and the Arribes designation of origin. Bacalao is also among the town’s traditional gastronomic products. The Spanish preparation of Bacalao a la tranca uses oil and garlic. Another local specialty is Hornazo de Fermoselle: a bread-like pastry made from unleavened dough with lard and oil, filled with chorizo.

The culinary offerings provide different points of interest: wine made from a local grape variety and carrying a designation of origin, a traditional fish dish and a filled pastry with chorizo. Together with the churches, old town and landscape, they offer a picture of Fermoselle that is not limited to a single reason to visit.
