Most na Soči was formerly called St. Lucia and was the economic and cultural centre of the Iron Age St. Lucia culture. The Archaeological Museum explains the significance of this culture and presents the history of the region, along with the archaeological research carried out here for more than a century and a half. Near the museum, in the eastern part of the town, you can see the foundations of a Roman atrium house dating from the 3rd century AD. Two clearly distinct periods are represented side by side: the Iron Age culture and the Roman building. Access arrangements for the foundations may vary; check them before your visit.

Traces of History

The Tolmin Museum also focuses on the history of the region. It preserves, protects and presents the movable cultural heritage of the Upper Soča Valley through exhibitions, collections, publications and educational programmes. The guided programme “The Path of the Three Castle Buildings” offers another perspective on the heritage, sharing the history of Kozlov Rob, the Coronini Mansion and the manor of the Patriarch of Aquileia in Na Doru. Booking conditions for the programme may change; check in advance.

Another historical story takes us to Kanalski Lom. There, the Church of St Primus and Felician was built in 1791. Its stone roof and freestanding bell tower give it a distinctive architectural appearance. In Javorca, the Memorial Church of the Holy Spirit commemorates the Austro-Hungarian defenders who fell on the Isonzo Front between 1915 and 1917. It bears the European Heritage Label. Near Tolmin, the German Charnel House is also part of the Walk of Peace from the Alps to the Adriatic.

Walking Routes on Different Scales

The Tolmin Gorges are the lowest-lying entrance to Triglav National Park. The circular trail through the gorges leads to a thermal spring with an average temperature of 18.8 to 20.8 °C and crosses the Devil’s Bridge, which stands 60 metres above the Tolminka. The route combines two distinct experiences: the stated temperature of the spring and the view down to the Tolminka from the bridge. As route conditions may change, check local access arrangements before your visit.

A walking trail connects the Tolmin Gorges with the Štrklepce car park. The average walking time for the 1.25-kilometre trail between the two points is 15 minutes; it is suitable for walkers and hikers of all ages. This time applies to the walk to Štrklepce, not to the circular trail through the gorges. Another walking trail between Tolmin and Zatolmin passes through meadows and along the edge of the forest.

“Lom je moj dom” offers a different scale: the circular trail is 12 kilometres long and is described as suitable for hikers, runners and cyclists. It passes through hamlets, across meadows and pastures, and along forest edges. Information boards share details about past and present life in the places along the route. Those interested in local everyday history will find not only a route description here, but also insights into how life in the hamlets has changed. Check the latest route information before setting out.

Landscape and Further Stages

From the Široko viewpoint, the panorama stretches from the Kolovrat ridge across Kanin and the Tolmin-Bohinj Mountains to Porezen and the mountains of the Idrija and Cerkno region. Which of these landscapes are visible depends on the weather. The protected areas also give a sense of the region’s scale: Natura 2000 sites cover 29.26 percent of the area of the Municipality of Tolmin. This proportion may change if site boundaries are adjusted.

For longer hiking plans, Tolmin is the recommended starting point for Stage 12 of the Juliana Trail; stage recommendations may be updated. Four other stages lead from Tolmin via Solkan towards the Goriška Brda wine region. So, alongside walks and circular trails, long-distance hiking trail stages offer another way to plan your trip. Checking the latest stage recommendation can help you fit the proposed route into your plans.
