Kobarid combines routes through the landscape with historical themes ranging from prehistory to the period after the Second World War. The Kobarid Historical Trail leads to various types of attractions; the Kobarid Museum presents the 12th Battle of the Soča Front. Routes between nature and history

The Kobarid Historical Trail is five kilometres long and connects historical, cultural, archaeological and natural attractions in the immediate vicinity of Kobarid. The historical heritage presented along the route spans from prehistory to the period after the Second World War.

The Bovec–Kobarid section of the Walk of Peace ends in the centre of Kobarid. This sets it apart from the Historical Trail: that trail connects attractions in the surrounding area, while here Kobarid is the clearly designated endpoint. So, when choosing between the two routes, consider whether you are interested in the five-kilometre themed trail or the section that ends in the town centre.

Slap Kozjak, also known as Veliki Kozjak, is the highest waterfall on the Kozjak stream, at 15 metres high. It can be reached via a maintained footpath. Trail conditions may change; check the latest information before your visit.

The Soča Front in the museum

The Kobarid Museum presents the 12th Battle of the Soča Front, also known as the “Miracle of Kobarid.” The collection is spread across twelve rooms on two floors. A short film about the Soča Front, describing the battle in more detail, is shown in a multimedia room. The museum received the Council of Europe Museum Prize.

Alpine pasture and cheese-making traditions

The historical ethnological collection “Od planine do Planike” presents the heritage of alpine pastures and the tradition of cheese-making in the Soča region. It includes ethnological exhibits, a documentary film and a reconstruction of an alpine hut, fully equipped for processing milk.

At the Cheese Museum Kobarid, the dairy organises cheese and other dairy product tastings, as well as an alpine farmer’s meal for private groups, by prior reservation. The local sweet dish kobariški štruklji consists of sweet pastry parcels filled with walnuts and raisins.

Activities on and along the Soča

The Kobarid Kayak School offers rafting on various sections of the Soča. In Kobarid, the school also offers whitewater kayaking lessons on the Soča. The two activities have different focuses: rafting takes place on various sections of the river, while the kayaking offer is whitewater instruction. Rafting sections and operating conditions, as well as the details of the kayaking lessons, may change; before making plans, check with the provider for information applicable to your dates.

The cycle route along the Nadiža runs from Kobarid via Robič to Podbela. A municipal webpage dated 24 March 2021 describes it as one of the routes whose accessibility, maintenance and signage the municipality is responsible for.
