The Bevk Trail begins at the Dom krajanov Hudajužna, Hudajužna 22c. The marked trail crosses the Bača River over a bridge and then climbs along a gravel forest track to Zakojca and the Franc Bevk Homestead. The walk from Hudajužna to Zakojca takes about one hour and 15 minutes. This gives you a clear sense of the starting point, destination and walking time; the trail connects the landscape with the memory of the writer France Bevk.

Along the Bevk Trail

On the approach from the Dom krajanov to the Bevk Trail, you will find the Chapel of St Barbara; an information board stands right beside it. The chapel is part of the sacred cultural heritage of the Baška grapa. After crossing the Bača River, the route passes a wooden bus stop in an alpine style. Three information boards there cover the history of Hudajužna and nearby Obloke. Along the way, you will encounter both sacred and local history before the route climbs further towards Zakojca.

The Bača River and railway history

The Bača River shapes more than just the route: between Hudajužna and Koritnica, it has carved out the Klonte Canyon. The Hudajužna railway station is also part of the area’s history. It was completely destroyed in a partisan sabotage operation and rebuilt after the war in the style of that period. The landscape and railway history thus offer two distinct ways to discover Hudajužna: the canyon tells the story of the Bača River’s impact, while the station’s history includes both destruction and reconstruction.

Hikes, readings and dates

The Bevk Days events take place every year on the third weekend of September. Traditionally, hikers from Hudajužna and Cerkno arrive in Zakojca along three different routes. If you are planning a trip around these dates, check the dates for the relevant year. During the annual hike along the Bevk Trail, passages from the works of France Bevk are read on the way to Zakojca.

The Heritage Echoes Festival also takes place annually. On 29 August 2025, the programme at the Dom krajanov Hudajužna included a lecture and a screening. If you are planning a stay in another year, check the festival dates for that year.

Other trails and landscape connections

A cycling route leads from Hudajužna along a forest road to Zakojca and the Franc Bevk Homestead. Local navigation may be necessary on unmarked cycling routes. Hudajužna is also considered one of the starting points for Črna prst, Porezen, Zakojca and Kojca. Access routes to these destinations may change seasonally, so check the conditions for your planned trip.

The forest track through the Zakojška Gorge is different: it is unmarked and not maintained. In the Zakojška Gorge, the Poreznica stream now serves as a fish farm stream and a breeding area for pure Soča marble trout. The marked Bevk Trail, the separately described cycling route and the unmaintained forest track therefore represent different trail conditions and landscape connections around Hudajužna.
