Volče combines churches with a long religious history and hiking trails whose distances and approximate walking times can be clearly assessed. This gives you two different options when planning your trip: visiting the churches and attending religious events, or hiking a described route.

Churches and Religious Traditions

The Church of Sv. Danijel in Volče is freely accessible; check access again before your trip. The present-day church dates from the 16th century. The frescoes also date from this century and are attributed to Jernej of Loka. In addition to the history of the building, the frescoes provide a distinct art-historical point of interest.

The Church of Sv. Lenart in Volče was first mentioned in 1459. It underwent extensive renovation in 1695; after suffering severe damage in the First World War, it was renovated again in 1921 under the direction of the parish priest at the time, Alojzij Kodermac. This sequence of dates highlights different stages in the church’s history: its first mention and two renovations.

The feast day of Saint Lenart is observed in the parish of Volče on November 6 with 24-hour adoration before evening Mass. Check the programme and access arrangements before visiting. In the wider area around Volče, the main pilgrimage gathering takes place in Mengore on the Sunday after September 8; here too, check the exact programme in advance.

Hiking Trails Around Volče

A recommended circular hike to Bučenica follows the Walk of Peace to the edge of Volče, where it turns towards Bučenica. The loop is 8.7 kilometres long and takes about 3.5 hours. From the saddle between Mengore and Bučenica, it descends to Volče along the Walk of Peace and then returns to the starting point.

Stage 11 of the Juliana Trail follows a forest track above the Soča to the first house in the village of Volče, then continues to Tolmin. The stage between Most na Soči and Tolmin is a moderately difficult 8.1-kilometre hike and takes about three hours. The estimated times are similar, but the routes differ: the Bučenica route is a loop that returns to the starting point, while Stage 11 continues to Tolmin.

The fifth stage of the Walk of Peace follows a paved road from the Soča Bridge towards the civilian cemetery in Volče. From Volče, the stage follows the signs towards Kolovrat.

Getting There and Practical Planning

Public transport is considered a suitable way to reach Stage 11. Bus services run from Ljubljana, Nova Gorica and Bovec via Most na Soči and Tolmin. Routes and timetables may change; check your connection before travelling. Also check trail conditions before hiking.
