Below Koseč lie the Koseška korita, gorges up to 60 metres deep. The circular trail through the area also takes in the waterfalls on the Stopnik stream and the Church of St. Justus, combining natural and cultural attractions.
Gorge and Waterfalls
The Stopnik stream forms four waterfalls along the Koseč route, each more than 20 metres high. The well-maintained circular trail passes numerous waterfalls along the stream. The measurements refer to different features: up to 60 metres is the depth of the Koseška korita, while more than 20 metres is the height of the four waterfalls. This distinction helps visitors understand gorge depth and waterfall height as two different features of the same natural destination.
Plan the Circular Trail
The circular trail through the Koseška korita is 3.3 kilometres long and starts in Koseč, near Drežnica. Because the gorges are very difficult to access, only the prepared section is open to visitors. This limitation is just as important when planning as the stated distance: the length describes the circular trail, not access to every part of the gorge. Steel cables are used to leave the streambed along the route. Check local information about current trail conditions before setting out.
Church of St. Justus
The circular trail passes the Church of St. Justus. It is listed as architectural heritage in Slovenia’s cultural heritage register and is considered one of the region’s oldest churches. For choosing a route, this means the church is not only a cultural heritage attraction in its own right, but also lies along the described trail. Visitors wishing to combine nature and architecture on an outing will find both interests covered in the same route plan.
Other Trails and Getting There
Another specific hiking option is the Kobarid–Kuhinja Mountain Hut stage of the Walk of Peace, which passes through Koseč. Its format differs from the circular trail through the Koseška korita: this is a stage with Kobarid and Kuhinja Mountain Hut as its endpoints, while the other is a loop starting in Koseč. When choosing between the routes, you can first decide whether to include the circular trail at the natural attraction or the Walk of Peace stage in your plans. Both routes pass through Koseč, but they are different options.
A hop-on hop-off bus connects Kobarid with Koseč in July and August. Check the current operating days and timetable before your trip if you plan to use this connection. The seasonal service information helps you take the bus into account as a specific, time-limited part of your journey.
A Break Along the Way
The circular trail offers a break at the energy points. On the way back, you can stop for refreshments at the Kranjc Tourist Farm in Koseč; check in advance whether it will be open on your travel dates.
