The Trenta Valley lies entirely within Triglav National Park. Nature takes different forms in Trenta: the Soča spring emerges from a cave with an underground lake, while the Mlinarica has carved a deep gorge. The Soča Trail offers its own perspective on the river, as well as routes through forests and meadows. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between the entire trail, its upper section and the short access route to the spring.

The Soča Spring and Mlinarica

A marked path leads from Koča pri Izviru Soče to the Soča spring in 15 minutes. Trail conditions can vary; check them before your visit. At the spring, the cave and its underground lake take centre stage. Mlinarica offers a different scale: the stream has carved a gorge one kilometre long and 100 metres deep. An eight-metre-high waterfall lies at the mouth of the Mlinarica. The two natural features are described differently, too: the spring is defined by its underground source, while Mlinarica is characterised by the depth of its gorge and the waterfall.

Making sense of the Soča Trail

The Soča Trail is a Triglav National Park trail that follows the Soča from its source to Bovec. The full route is 25 kilometres long. It crosses technically easy terrain but includes short steep sections. Forests and meadows alternate with stretches alongside the river. These details give you different points of reference: the length describes the entire trail, while the terrain assessment and short steep sections are important when planning your route.

The upper section starts at Koča pri Izviru Soče and ends in Na Logu in Trenta with a visit to the Triglav National Park Information Centre, Dom Trenta. Seven information points along the upper section present the valley’s heritage, as well as topics in nature, geology and forestry. This part of the trail therefore offers not only river and landscape views, but also specific ways to learn about the valley.

The starting point of the Soča Trail is accessible by public transport; timetables can vary. Check the connection in advance. For planning your time, it is also helpful to distinguish between the full route and access to the spring: the 25 kilometres refers to the trail from the spring to Bovec, while the 15 minutes refers to the marked path from Koča pri Izviru Soče to the spring.

Juliana and Dom Trenta

The Juliana Alpine Botanical Garden is the oldest alpine botanical garden in a natural setting in Slovenia. Albert Bois de Chesne founded it in 1926. A guide to identifying 100 plants is available for the garden. It is available in Slovenian, Italian, German, English and French. The five languages make the guide a practical resource for anyone interested in learning about the garden’s plants. Juliana is accessible via the Bovec–Trenta road.

Dom Trenta has a different focus: it presents the natural features of Triglav National Park. One of the museum’s distinctive features is the video installation “Secrets of the Soča – Time Horizon” by Andrej Zdravič. The sites therefore offer different highlights: Juliana focuses on identifying plants, while Dom Trenta combines topics relating to the park’s natural environment with the video installation. The Soča Trail, in turn, offers a route through landscapes with information points. This distinction can help you choose the focus of your stay according to your interests.
