The Walk of Peace begins in the Alps at Štoln in Log Pod Mangartom, the entrance to the former mine, and continues all the way to the Adriatic. Along its route, it connects remnants and memorial sites of the Isonzo Front. This means that Log Pod Mangartom brings together a specific place with a mining past and a far-reaching memorial route. This gives you a clear focus when choosing a stay, without overlooking the area’s other cultural and landscape features.

Mining, Front History and Settlement Patterns

The old Štoln entrance is connected to the former lead and zinc mine in Raibl (Cave del Predil). The shrine of Saint Barbara in Log Pod Mangartom also refers to the area’s mining history. Together, they offer two different points of reference for this theme: the entrance to a former mine and a shrine that recalls the mining heritage.

The Austro-Hungarian military cemetery in Log Pod Mangartom is one of the best-preserved First World War military cemeteries in Slovenia. It provides a distinct focus alongside mining. While the Walk of Peace connects remnants and memorial sites of the Isonzo Front, the cemetery commemorates the First World War.

The settlement pattern is also part of the area’s local cultural history: Gornji Log pod Mangartom and Spodnji Log pod Mangartom are part of a Mediterranean settlement pattern in the park, consisting of groups of farmsteads or several farms along a transport route. The cultural picture therefore encompasses the arrangement of settlements as well as mining and front history.

Hiking Trail and River Landscape

The easy hiking trail from Kluže Fortress to Log Pod Mangartom passes through a tunnel on the right bank of the Koritnica and continues to the confluence of the Koritnica and Nemčlja. Along the trail, you can visit the gorge and the Nemčlja stream waterfall. Unlike the Walk of Peace, which continues all the way to the Adriatic, this trail is defined by specific landscape features such as the tunnel, riverbank and confluence.

Another specific location for canyoning is the exit point of the canyoning route: it is at the bridge over the Predelica River in Log Pod Mangartom, at an altitude of 650 m.

Getting There and Seasonal Options

The cross-border Bovec–Tarvisio–Kranjska Gora bus route serves stops in the lower and upper parts of Log Pod Mangartom. Timetables are seasonal; check operating days and times before travelling. It is also worth noting which of the two parts of the village is the relevant bus stop for your plans.

When snow conditions are favourable, a simple cross-country ski trail is set up in the immediate vicinity of the ski area. This option explicitly depends on snow conditions. Check conditions for your planned dates if you would like to include cross-country skiing in your winter itinerary.

The cultural and landscape features provide the area with a lasting framework; the bus timetable and cross-country ski trail, by contrast, depend on seasonal information and snow conditions. When planning your trip, you can consider these weather- and timetable-dependent factors separately from your choice of historical or landscape highlights.
