Podbrdo combines natural and railway history with marked mountain trails. Notable natural features include waterfalls and the glacially formed Kamrca Canyon; the Bohinj Railway emerges from the tunnel directly into Podbrdo station. Seasonal conditions and the different trail routes are especially important for planning your visit.
Waterfalls, Gorges and Seasonal Nature
Before joining the Bača, the Driselpoh stream flows through the glacially formed Kamrca Canyon. The canyon is easily accessible, but access conditions may change after storms. The Driselpoh also forms several small waterfalls; the highest is 7 m tall. Their flow depends on rain and snowmelt. The Driselpoh Gorge is among Slovenia’s hundred natural wonders.
The Travbah stream also flows from BaÄŤa pri Podbrdu to Podbrdo, forming a 7 m waterfall along the way. Water and ice conditions vary seasonally. Another sight is the Rus Waterfall: the stream from Petrovo Brdo reaches Podbrdo via the waterfall, which is visible from the road between Podbrdo and Petrovo Brdo. Vegetation and the season affect visibility.
A special botanical sight is the endemic short-haired sandwort. Its nearest habitat is on the vertical and overhanging rocks along the road before Podbrdo, opposite the wastewater treatment plant. The plant blooms in early May and can already be seen at higher elevations from July; weather and altitude can affect the timing.
Hiking to ÄŚrna prst and on the Juliana Trail
A marked trail leads from Podbrdo to ÄŚrna prst in about three hours; it is considered easy. Check trail conditions and markings before setting out. At the pass, views extend across the Bohinj Valley to Triglav, although visibility depends on the weather. The hut on ÄŚrna prst is a 15-minute walk away; the summit is another minute beyond it.
The Juliana Trail’s eighth stage runs from Bohinjska Bistrica over Vrh Bače and then steeply down into the Podbrdo valley. The ninth stage starts in Podbrdo and climbs to Kalarsko Brdo. The trail is marked with signposts and can be walked without a guide. As route descriptions may be revised, check the current stage route before setting out.
Military Trails and Cycling Routes
The GM4O route follows old military mule tracks and mountain paths on the slopes of ÄŚrna prst and Porezen. The GM4O Mountain Marathon starts at the Podbrdo TIC and finishes in Podbrdo. If you are planning to visit for the race, check the dates and participation requirements for your chosen period.
The Rapallo Trail follows an old military mule track and passes a well-preserved underground bunker and the barracks on Robarjev griÄŤ. Physical access may change; check which sections are accessible before setting out.
For cyclists, two route descriptions head in different directions: From Podbrdo and Baška grapa, the route climbs towards Petrovo Brdo, the watershed between the Soča and Sava. Another route runs from Zakojca over ridges and past remote farmsteads towards Baška grapa and Podbrdo. One route therefore focuses on the climb and watershed, while the other highlights ridges and scattered farmsteads.
Church, Exhibition and Bohinj Railway
The Baroque parish church of St Nicholas is considered Podbrdo’s most important cultural and historical monument and was mentioned as early as 1588. Next to the church in the old village centre is Jakovkna House, a permanent exhibition in a renovated historic house. It presents the settlement of the upper Baška grapa in the 13th century as the result of extensive German colonisation and also documents the construction of the Bohinj Tunnel and railway line, completed in 1906.
The railway station is also part of this railway history. The station complex stands on an embankment built with material excavated during the construction of the Bohinj Tunnel. Historically, the station was renamed Piedicolle and became a border transfer station.
