In the Nové Zámky District, nature ranges from rare breeding birds to a botanical rarity of the Slovak steppe. The region also has traces of history, museums and thermal water. Exploring the area therefore reveals a wide range of different facets—from protected habitats to cultural attractions in Nové Zámky and other parts of the district.

Natural Areas with Distinctive Character

The 590-hectare Parížske močiare protected area is the only confirmed breeding site of the Moustached Warbler in Slovakia. Žitavský luh is also significant for birds: this 124-hectare protected area preserves the last remnant of an original meandering watercourse. Spotted Crakes and Western Marsh Harriers breed there every year; the area is also an important stopover and migration site for waterbirds, especially Garganeys. These species make it an interesting destination for nature watching, although individual sightings depend on the season and are not guaranteed.

Kamenínske slaniská offers a different perspective on the landscape. This 144.74-hectare Natura 2000 site lies in Kamenín and Kamenný Most. The Čenkovská step National Nature Reserve lies within the Čenkov protected area and is one of its two national nature reserves. It is also home to Slovakia’s only occurrence of Ephedra distachya. More than 200-year-old oaks stand in Berek Forest Park in Nové Zámky, and the Burda mountain range is part of the Kováčovské kopce National Nature Reserve.

One way to experience the area on a longer bike ride is the 30.5-kilometre loop around Burda. It starts and ends in Štúrovo and passes through Kamenica nad Hronom, Chľaba and Leľa. Surface and access conditions may change, so check them before setting out.

Museums, Architecture and Regional Culture

The Múzeum Jána Thaina is dedicated to the cultural heritage of Nové Zámky and its surroundings. Its work includes archaeological finds, historical and ethnographic collections, and library holdings. The permanent exhibitions cover archaeology, history, ethnography and notable regional figures; individual displays may change. The Galéria umenia Ernesta Zmetáka brings together European art from the 16th to the 20th century and a permanent exhibition devoted to Lajos Kassák. Guided tours, workshops, lectures and film screenings complement the program, and individual events vary.

The buildings of Nové Zámky tell different chapters of the city’s history. The Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Cross was built in 1584 and 1585. The Baroque Trinity group, dating from 1749, commemorates the great plague epidemic of 1740. Preserved bastions reveal the former fortress and the city’s hexagonal layout; the preserved Forgách Bastion is home to the Calvary from 1779.

The Orthodox synagogue also brings architecture and remembrance together: it is rectangular, has one storey and includes a choir. Several Holocaust memorials are located inside the synagogue and on its grounds. Group and individual visits can be arranged in advance through the tourist information office or by email. Palárikovo Hunting Lodge offers a different focus: the Late Classicist building stands amid an extensive English-style park and a wooden water tower, a unique technical monument. It is open to visitors seasonally; guided tours take place on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check the hours before planning your visit, as they may change.

Žitavská paprika is part of the region’s food culture and is listed as a European Union protected designation of origin. It offers another way to experience the region’s distinct character—this time through a local food product rather than a building or natural area.

Thermal Water and Practical Information

Geothermal water shapes the bathing facilities in Podhájska. It was tapped in 1973 at a depth of 1,900 metres and reaches temperatures of up to 83 °C there. The thermal bath uses highly mineralized geothermal healing water whose mineral composition is comparable to that of the Dead Sea. The complex includes the Aquamarin wellness centre, with bathing, vitality and sauna areas as well as massage services. Check the current facilities and services before visiting.

The Vadaš Thermal Resort in Štúrovo can also be described in concrete terms: it covers 25 hectares and has nine pools. At Štrand Emila Tatárika, the thermal water comes from a 1,506-metre-deep geothermal borehole and reaches 52 °C. These different figures give an objective overview of the thermal facilities without equating them.

The transport hubs are also useful for getting around the Nové Zámky District: Nové Zámky and Palárikovo are important railway junctions. Road border crossings are located in Štúrovo and Salka; the Danube forms part of the district’s southeastern border with Hungary. Other regional highlights range from the meandering watercourse at Žitavský luh to art and history in Nové Zámky—a mix that offers plenty for both nature and culture enthusiasts.
