Veľký Kýr combines the old riverbed of the Nitra with a Baroque church, a late Baroque chapel and a historic wine cellar lane. This offers three different ways to experience the place: landscape, sacred architecture and the Festival of Wine. This mix can help you decide on your trip if you would like to know not only where to stay but also which themes shape the character of the destination. You can focus on its riverside location, its architectural history or the festival as a time-specific occasion.

River Landscape in the Danubian Lowland

Veľký Kýr lies in the Danubian Lowland on both banks of the old riverbed of the Nitra, which runs through the town centre. Its location on both banks describes the broader geographic setting; its course through the middle also places the river in the centre of the town. If you would like to consider the landscape when choosing a destination, this combination of lowland and riverbed is a distinctive starting point for getting your bearings in Veľký Kýr.

An Early Written Mention

The first written mention dates from 1113: Veľký Kýr appears under the name Ker in a charter issued by King Coloman, transferring the village to Zobor Abbey. Ker is the historical form of the name in this reference, not the present-day name of the town. This mention broadens the perspective beyond individual buildings and places the town’s history in the early 12th century.

Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross

The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross reflects a building history spanning several periods. It is a Baroque church, created in 1768 through the complete reconstruction of an older medieval church. The reconstruction thus connects a medieval predecessor with the church’s Baroque appearance. Inside the church is a stone baptismal font dating from the mid-19th century. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. If you would like to visit the interior, check access in advance to take its ongoing religious use into account.

The Chapel of the Holy Trinity and Its Fittings

The Chapel of the Holy Trinity complements the religious focus, but it is a separate building with its own date. It is late Baroque and dates from 1793. Its Louis XVI-style altar features a painting of the Holy Trinity from 1820. The chapel was therefore built 25 years after the church was reconstructed; its painting was created a further 27 years later. This makes it possible to follow the building history chronologically, rather than treating the building and its fittings as having been created at the same time.

Historic Wine Cellar Lane and the Festival of Wine

The historic wine cellar lane in Veľký Kýr is part of the Festival of Wine and comprises 72 wine cellars. The festival is organised by an association of local winemakers. An invitation dated 6 July 2026 announced its 15th edition. The wine cellar lane is 150 metres west of Veľký Kýr railway station, giving you a specific landmark to help locate it. If the festival is important to your travel dates, check the specific event dates in advance.
