Rúbaň can be explored through a range of themes: the castle and church tell the story of the town, a large landscape park lies beside the castle, and Château Rúbaň combines winemaking with tastings. These themes can help you decide what to focus on when planning your trip—whether you are most interested in architecture and art, the landscape, or grape varieties and wine.

Castle, Church and Local History

Rúbaň Castle was built in the second half of the 18th century in the Neoclassical style, probably by the Horváthy family from Disznós. In 1830, the Jankovich family had the castle remodelled. It was originally intended more as a comfortable summer residence for wealthy families than as a prestigious wine estate. The construction date, renovation and original purpose each offer different insights into the building’s history.

Construction of the Roman Catholic Church of St Imrich began in 1908 on the foundations of an earlier church. The interior features works of art from different periods: the barrel vault bears a secco painting of the miraculous multiplication of the loaves, created by amateur painter Štefan Petica in 1967. Above the choir are illusionistic secco and wall paintings of Saint Stephen and Saint Imrich by Pavol Miskolczy, dating from 1979. The church also contains a polychrome Baroque Pietà from the 18th century, brought here from Šaštín in the 19th century. The church thus brings together 20th-century paintings and an older sculpture.

More recent local history is also tied to a specific date: a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk was erected in Rúbaň in 2025 and consecrated on 4 July during Dni obce Rúbaň. The event took place on 4 and 5 July 2025. Its programme included a cultural programme at the cultural centre and continued the following day at the sports field. An 8th-century Slavic-Avar skeletal burial ground was also discovered within the municipality; earlier settlement there is likely.

Landscape Park and Willow Grove

A 54.77-hectare natural and landscape park lies directly beside the castle. The Steiger family established it around 1887. Twelve species of protected exotic trees and shrubs continue to grow there. The park’s size and distinctive collection of trees give it a clear botanical character, setting it apart from the castle’s architectural focus.

Another landscape feature can be found on the municipal boundary between Rúbaň and Strekov: a willow grove beside a pond, with several romantic corners. The park and willow grove therefore have different characters—the landscaped grounds beside the castle, with their protected trees and shrubs, and the willows by the pond on the municipal boundary.

Grape Varieties and Wine at Château Rúbaň

Château Rúbaň combines modern winemaking technologies with traditional methods; the grapes are hand-picked and sorted. Visitors to the ampelographic collection can learn about the characteristics, history and current status of the individual grape varieties. Grapes and wine made from grapes in this collection are also available for tasting. Château Rúbaň also offers wine tastings featuring wines that reflect the distinctive character of the region. As these are current visitor services, check the visiting and tasting arrangements before your trip. Private parking is available directly on the Château grounds.

Practical Information for Your Visit

The fire station in Rúbaň houses a permanent exhibition about the town’s past and present, as well as the local volunteer fire brigade. Please register with the municipal office in advance of your visit. During its opening hours, you can also get an anniversary stamp there, for example for hiking and travel diaries, notebooks, Rúbaň postcards or similar keepsakes. If you plan to get the stamp, check the municipal office’s current opening hours in advance.

For anglers, the 10-hectare VN Rúbaň č. 2 reservoir is another option: it is near Rúbaň and designated for fishing. Check access and any required permits with the local fishing organisation before your trip.
