Nové Zámky combines urban history with regional culture, thermal waters and time spent in green spaces. The Ján Thain Museum explores the cultural heritage of the town and its surroundings; the outlines of most of the former fortress bastions can still be made out on the town map. For relaxation, there are the nine pools at the Štrand thermal complex and the peaceful natural surroundings of Berek Forest Park. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first decide whether culture, thermal baths or time outdoors should be the focus of your stay.
Museum and town history
The Ján Thain Museum researches, collects and makes accessible the cultural heritage of Nové Zámky and its surroundings. Its permanent exhibitions cover archaeology, history, ethnography and regional figures. These topics offer different perspectives: archaeological and historical viewpoints sit alongside ethnographic themes and regional figures. Visitor services include educational tours, specialist lectures, and history and local studies lessons. Depending on your personal interests, you can focus on individual subject areas or view the exhibition themes as a broader overview of the cultural heritage and the surrounding area.
Nové Zámky was founded in the 16th century on the site of four villages destroyed by the Turks. The outlines of most of the former fortress bastions can still be made out on the town map. A monument in Nové Zámky commemorates the great plague epidemic of 1740. These connections offer different historical perspectives: the town’s foundation, the former fortress complex and the commemoration of a specific event. The 16th-century foundation and the memorial to 1740 provide two dated points of reference; the bastions add physical traces of the former fortress.
Thermal waters, a park and a cycling route
The Štrand thermal complex offers a different focus. It has nine pools. Its thermal water comes from a 1,506-metre-deep geothermal borehole and reaches 52 °C. Opening may vary by season; check before your visit whether the complex will be open during your travel dates.
Berek Forest Park lies in the southwest of Nové Zámky and offers relaxation in peaceful natural surroundings. Several paved paths and forest trails offer different types of routes for spending time outdoors; which ones suit your interests may help you decide how to visit the park. The forest park can be reached across a bridge only on foot or by bicycle; motor vehicles are not permitted. As access rules may change, check them before your visit.
The 019a Ponitrianska Cycling Route is suitable for recreational cyclists and families with children. When planning your trip, you can choose between a cycling route and spending time in a peaceful natural area with several types of paths.
