Nána combines a protected natural area with a strong culture of remembrance and wine offerings that require prior arrangement. The village lies where the Hron meets the Danube; its western municipal boundary extends to the Danube. You can choose different focuses for your trip: Vŕšok represents the natural environment, monuments and memorials tell the story of the village, and the Gerendás lookout tower offers views of the surrounding area.

Vŕšok Protected Area and Its Location on the Danube

The Vŕšok protected area was established in 1965 to protect rare xerothermic flora and fauna. The area is subject to the fourth level of protection and is also part of the European Natura 2000 protected area network. This makes Vŕšok a clearly defined natural attraction in Nána. The village installed an information board at Vŕšok in 2007. Nature enthusiasts can set this focus against the village’s memorial sites and architecture: Vŕšok is defined by its conservation purpose, while the historical memorials focus on specific events and anniversaries.

Monuments, Church and Local Remembrance

The Nána monument to the world wars and the Trianon memorial stone stand in the village park. The war memorial was erected in 1939 to commemorate those who fell in the First World War and ten young people who were shot by Czechoslovak legionaries in 1919. On 21 August 2016, a Turul, an ancient Hungarian symbol, was placed on the monument. The statue was made by sculptor vitéz Csák Attila from Páty. The Trianon memorial stone was placed in the village park in 2010, on the 90th anniversary of the Trianon Peace Dictate. Since it was erected, local residents have gathered there each year on the Day of National Unity; people from other places sometimes join them.

There are also memorials by the church, each with its own historical reference. A memorial column was erected to the right of the church in 2007 to mark the 850th anniversary of the village’s first written mention. At the entrance stands the Ősi Magyar Kapu, commemorating Nána’s 855th anniversary in 2012. The Church of St. Vendelín (Kostol sv. Vendelína) was created in 1791 by converting an older Baroque chapel. It is Neoclassical, single-naved and has a roof turret. The church continues to serve its religious purpose; please check access before visiting.

When placing events in context, it is helpful to distinguish between the years when memorials were erected and the events they commemorate: 1939 is the year the war memorial was built, while 1919 is the year of the shooting it also commemorates. The Trianon memorial stone was erected in 2010, on the 90th anniversary of the Peace Dictate. The two memorials by the church also mark different anniversaries: Nána’s first written mention and the village’s existence.

Commemorative Dates and Gerendás

The Nána Csemadok organization has erected twelve memorials in the village. Its annual events include 15 March, observed since 1991; Heroes’ Day, in memory of those who fell in the war; the Trianon commemoration, held since 2016; the St. Stephen’s Day celebration, held since 2010; the commemoration of the martyrs of Arad, held since 1992; and the lighting of candles in memory of the 1956 Revolution, held since 2006. The list shows how Nána commemorates its history through both permanent memorials and recurring community events.

The Gerendás lookout tower was built in 2011 above the grounds of the Gerendás guesthouse. It offers relatively attractive views of the grounds, with the panorama of the small Burda Mountains in the background. In the distance, you can see Štúrovo and the Basilica of Esztergom. A regional cycling strategy listed the lookout as freely accessible; check local access conditions before your visit.

By prior arrangement, Gerendás offers cellar tours with tastings of barrel-aged and bottled wines in an atmospheric vaulted cellar. Arrange your visit in advance. This lets you choose between taking in the landscape from the lookout tower and booking a cellar visit with a wine tasting.
