Veľké Lovce lies on the western slope of the Pohronská pahorkatina; the eastern part of its cadastral area is covered with oak and acacia forests. The village also has a church dating from 1907, museums with different visiting arrangements, and traces of sacred history. When planning your trip, a practical question arises: would you like to focus on culture and collections, or include a multi-day route? The landscape, history and local events offer several themes to explore.
Landscape and routes
Its location on the western slope places the village within the Pohronská pahorkatina; the forests in the eastern cadastral area add a natural element to the landscape. For hikers, the three-day route “Trojdenná motanica okolím Podhájskej” runs from Vrstevník through Veľké Lovce to Lótsky kríž and on to Čechy. For cyclists, Zákostolie in Veľké Lovce is a stop on the eighth loop of the “Cyklopotulky medzi Žitavou a Hronom” series, which focuses on vanished religious monuments. The routes therefore differ in focus: one is a multi-day hiking itinerary between named places, while the other is a themed cycling series. Check route conditions before setting out; before visiting Zákostolie, check the access arrangements.
History and sacred sites
The earliest surviving mention of the village dates from 1236. The Roman Catholic Church of Materstvo Panny Márie dates from 1907. A monument to the victims of the First and Second World Wars stands in the local cemetery; it was created by academic sculptor Jozef Kliský. Another historical landmark lies within the cadastral area: the ruins of the former Baroque church and Pauline monastery of Mariánska Čeľaď (Máriacsalád). Here, you can encounter various aspects of local history, from the earliest written mention and a church building to church and monastery ruins.
Museums and planning your visit
The local museum in Veľké Lovce is not open every day; visits can be arranged by telephone. Occasional exhibitions there feature embroidery, woven hemp textiles and lace. These topics focus on textile handicrafts and offer a different way to explore local culture than the historic buildings do.
The House of Folk Architecture (Dom ľudového bývania) is a private museum. You can arrange a visit with its founder, Jozef Galbavý; the house is listed as a national cultural monument. A report from August 2026 gives an approximate visiting time of 25 minutes. The contrast with the explicitly three-day hiking route is a useful way to compare the time commitment: the museum can be included as a short stop, while the route spans several days. If you are considering both, plan the museum visit as a separate appointment that needs to be arranged.
Local events
The Lóťanské folklórne slávnosti is a local folklore event in Veľké Lovce. The goulash cooking competition is also part of the village’s events and is considered the start of summer. An announcement from 2024 scheduled it for 29 June. If you would like to plan your trip around the competition, check the dates for your travel period.
