Čechy combines the hills of the Pohronská pahorkatina with a pond and activities whose conditions vary by season. The cycling route can also be used on foot; fishing is possible during the fishing season. The ski lift and ice skating depend on winter conditions. This makes it possible to choose when to travel based on the landscape, culture and activities you want to enjoy.

Landscape and Nature

Čechy lies in the hills of the Pohronská pahorkatina at an average elevation of 240 metres. Almost the entire municipality is surrounded by deciduous forests. Together with the hilly surroundings and the pond’s inset water surface, this creates a view of the village framed by nature in every season.

The Krivé hrabiny Natura 2000 site (SKUEV0086) covers 125.74 hectares and includes plot 793 in the cadastral area of Čechy, where protection level 2 applies. Protection has been proposed for three habitat types in Krivé hrabiny: “Carpathian and Pannonian oak-hornbeam forests” (91G0), “Pannonian-Balkanic turkey oak forests” (91M0), and “Eurosiberian oak forests on loess and sand” (91I0). This natural area therefore combines specific protected sites with a landscape shaped by hills and deciduous forest.

Cycling Route, Pond and Winter Activities

A cycling route runs through Čechy’s attractive natural landscape. The same route can also be used for walks and hikes. Check locally before your trip to confirm whether the route is available.

The pond offers two seasonal options. During the fishing season, it is open to anglers and stocked with carp. In the winter months, if it is frozen, it can be used for ice skating and hockey. The pond is opposite the ski slope, so ice activities are explicitly dependent on freezing conditions.

The ski slope has snowmaking equipment. The municipality has a 200-metre-long ski lift, which operates when snow conditions are suitable. When the lift is running, night skiing is also available from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Operating hours are seasonal and may change, so check them in advance. When snow conditions are suitable, the surrounding area of Čechy also offers terrain for cross-country skiing.

There is a clear distinction when choosing when to travel: winter activities depend on snow or frost, while fishing depends on the fishing season. The cycling route, walks and hikes add to the options, while the pond and wooded hills shape the landscape of the area in every season.

History and the Village’s Character

Čechy was first mentioned in writing in 1419. Between 1416 and 1419, several Hussite families settled here as the settlement grew rapidly. The history of settlement thus reaches back to the period of its first written mention.

Another historical landmark is the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul (“Kostol sv. Petra a Pavla”). It was originally a Baroque church dating from 1735 and was remodelled at the beginning of the 20th century. Along with the early written mention and the Hussite settlement, the church’s history adds insight into the different periods of Čechy’s past.
