In Meissen, narrow lanes and streets wind past small squares, shops and restaurants on the way up to the castle hill. From the top, the view stretches across the rooftops of the Old Town and the Elbe river landscape. Architectural history, porcelain, museums and wine offer different ways to explore the city.

Discover the Old Town and castle hill

The heritage trail runs through Meissen’s historic Old Town, whose architecture is shaped by Gothic and Renaissance styles. It takes in 25 historic monuments in all, including the Late Gothic town hall, a Renaissance portal, Albrechtsburg Castle and the cathedral, as well as the Bishop’s Palace and the cathedral courtyards. Visitors interested in the buildings will find a specific selection along the route.

The “Cradle of Saxony” tour offers a different perspective. It leads through the restored Old Town, past Renaissance townhouses and old cathedral courtyards, to Cathedral Square and the ensemble of Albrechtsburg Castle and the cathedral. Guided public city tours are also available. For current booking details for the “Cradle of Saxony” tour, it is worth enquiring before your visit.

A modern electric minibus travels through the winding lanes of the historic Old Town on its way up to the castle hill. Its route leads to Albrechtsburg Castle and the cathedral. This gives you the option of taking a ride or walking through the lanes as you explore the city; the route on foot passes small squares, shops and restaurants.

Porcelain and city history

At the visitor centre of the State Porcelain Manufactory Meissen, you can see how Meissen porcelain is shaped and painted. At Albrechtsburg Castle, virtual displays and interactive media stations bring the history of the castle and the Wettin dynasty to life. The HistoPad adds an interactive discovery tour featuring augmented reality and 3D displays: nine time portals take you back to the 15th century. Exhibition displays may change, so check the latest visitor information in advance.

The Meissen City Museum is located in the heart of the Old Town, in a former Franciscan monastery. Historic models illustrate the city’s development; large exhibits focus on viticulture as well as fishing and shipping on the Elbe. Typical Meissen porcelain and ceramic products are also part of the exhibition. In addition to its permanent display, the museum presents changing special exhibitions twice a year.

At the “Holy Cross” monastery ruins, the Hahnemann Centre explores Samuel Hahnemann’s legacy through seminars, exhibitions and lectures. The ruins also host recurring events: concerts, theatre performances and the traditional Rose Festival take place there several times a year. Check specific event dates separately.

Wine and routes around Meissen

You can taste Meissen wine in the city and in the surrounding Elbe wine villages along the river. From spring to autumn, the Meissen Wine Pavilion on the market square invites visitors to sample top Saxon wines every day. A culinary city tour offers further tastings: it includes two savoury samples and one sweet sample, a small glass of Meissen wine, and two samples of local beer. The tour is a bookable offer; enquire about current booking details in advance.

Cycling and hiking routes are also among the region’s options. The Elbe Cycle Route runs right through Meissen and can be explored by bike. At around 90 kilometres long, the Saxon Wine Trail connects Pirna, Dresden, Radebeul, Meissen and Diesbar-Seußlitz. This gives you different options when planning: exploring the city’s buildings and museums, enjoying tastings in Meissen, or taking a longer route through several places along the Elbe.
