There are also a number of cultural attractions. When planning, you can compare the route lengths and decide whether hiking, cycling or visiting historic sites should be the main focus.

Choose Hiking Routes by Length

Diera-Zehren has six easy circular hiking trails: Löbsal is 5 kilometres long, Nieschütz 10 kilometres, Diera 6.5 kilometres, Zadel 6 kilometres, Zehren 11 kilometres and Hebelei also 6.5 kilometres. This gives you a choice ranging from the shortest route in Löbsal to the longer trails in Nieschütz and Zehren. The distances provide a concrete basis for comparing routes when planning your day; also take your own pace and possible breaks into account. Check the local trail signs before setting off.

The Elbe Landscape on Foot and by Bike

The landscapes for hiking and cycling combine the Elbe floodplains and valleys with vineyards and distinctive quarry formations. There is also the Golkwald, which covers around 200 hectares. This variety offers different themes to consider when planning: you can focus on river landscapes, winegrowing, the quarry formations or the forest, while also using route length as a basis for comparison.

The Elbe Cycle Route passes through Diera-Zehren between Meißen and Riesa. The Niederlommatzsch–Diesbar-Seußlitz ferry provides a way to cross the Elbe and is therefore a separate point to consider when planning a cycling tour. Its service may be seasonal or subject to change, so check the current timetable in advance. This lets you factor in the ferry crossing when planning your route without assuming a particular operating period.

A Stop in Hebelei and Historic Sites

The park in Hebelei lies along the Elbe Cycle Route. It is home to around 100 animals and enclosures for about 20 species; there is also a biotope pond, a playground and a petting enclosure. This offers another possible stop in the district of Hebelei, in addition to continuing your journey. Check the current operating details before visiting.

St. Michael's Church in Zehren also offers a historical highlight. The late Baroque church was completed in 1787; a chapel at the site is mentioned as early as 1316. The interior is simply and brightly designed. If you would like to visit, check access arrangements in advance, as access may vary.

Schloss Schieritz rises about 40 metres above the Ketzerbach valley and was the origin of the village of Schieritz. The castle was built between 1556 and 1601. Its location and the period in which it was built give the site its own historical significance; however, you should not assume it is open to the public.

More to Explore in the Wider Meißen Destination

The wider Meißen destination also offers cultural and culinary themes to consider when planning. At the visitor centre of the State Porcelain Manufactory Meissen, you can see how Meissen porcelain is shaped and painted. At the exhibition in Albrechtsburg Castle in Meißen, virtual displays and interactive media stations introduce visitors to the history of the castle and the Wettin dynasty; if you are planning a specific visit, check the current exhibition details. You can sample Meißen wine in the town of Meißen and in the surrounding Elbe wine villages along the river.
