Lommatzsch’s historic market is a good starting point for exploring local history and cycle routes: the collection of the local history museum is located here, and the Lommatzsch circular route starts and ends here. Deep cellars lie beneath the market; St. Wenceslas Church and the Terence Hill Museum add to the cultural attractions. Routes also lead into the landscape of the Lommatzscher Pflege.

Church, Market and Museums

St. Wenceslas Church is one of Lommatzsch’s best-known sights. Its three towers make it one of the few churches of this type in Saxony. Numerous deep cellars lie beneath the historic market, some of which are still in use today. The town thus offers two distinct aspects of architectural history: a church visible from far away and cellar complexes beneath the market.

The local history museum was founded in 1909 and opened to the public in 1911. Its collection is housed at Markt 14, in the oldest building on the market square. The Terence Hill Museum dedicates an exhibition to the actor’s childhood connection with Lommatzsch. QR-code-based audio guide stations complement the exhibition and offer another way to explore this subject.

You can also learn more about the town’s underground history: guided tours of Lommatzsch’s deep cellars can be arranged individually. Be sure to arrange an appointment in advance. A 360-degree photo tour also gives you an impression of the Schaubergkeller; if you plan to use this digital preview, check its availability beforehand.

Cycle Routes and the Landscape of the Lommatzscher Pflege

Lommatzsch is the center of the Lommatzscher Pflege, known as the “granary of Saxony” in the loess hill country of central Saxony. The landscape features fertile fields, orchards and tree-lined avenues stretching towards the Elbe Valley. Numerous routes through the Lommatzscher Pflege can be explored on foot or by bike year-round.

The Lommatzsch circular route starts at the historic market and leads back to Lommatzsch. Along the way, it passes through the characteristic landscape of the Lommatzscher Pflege, with wide-open fields and small villages, as far as the Elbe. Part of the route follows the Elbe Cycle Route; the return journey is via the Elbe-Mulde Route. This makes it different from a mere link to a single long-distance cycle route: it leads from Lommatzsch to the Elbe and then returns by a different route.

The Orchard Blossom Route offers a different focus: it is the shortest cycle connection from Lommatzsch to the Elbe Cycle Route near Niederlommatzsch. The route is signposted throughout in both directions; directional and distance information, as well as orientation boards, help you find your way. When choosing between the routes, the key considerations are therefore their course and destination: the Lommatzsch circular route leads back to Lommatzsch, while the Orchard Blossom Route connects to the Elbe Cycle Route.

Digital Experiences and Events

The digital historical town tour is titled “Historical Town Tour - Digital.” It features 360-degree panoramas, historical photographs, interactive maps and virtual drone flights over the landscape. Together with the photo tour of the Schaubergkeller, it offers a digital perspective on local history and the surrounding area, though the two experiences show different things: one tour takes you through historical views and maps, while the other gives you an impression of the Schaubergkeller.

Events the town invites visitors to include the Summer Night Ball, the Harvest Festival and the Lummscher Krautmarkt, as well as farm Christmas events and carnival celebrations. As dates vary from year to year, check the schedule for your travel dates in advance.
