Strehla offers three distinct starting points for planning a trip: a varied park landscape, animal encounters at the small animal zoo and a technical monument on the Elbe Cycle Route. The city park combines the former palace park with Elbe terraces and views of the valley; at the zoo, encounters with dwarf goats take centre stage. You can decide whether the landscape, animals or, in addition, culture in the wider Meißen destination should shape your stay.

Discover the City Park and Elbe Valley

Strehla’s city park occupies the former palace park. Its landscape includes wooded steep slopes, Elbe terraces, an orchard meadow and erosion gullies; it also offers views across the Elbe Valley. The variety of landscape features gives the park different character: wooded slopes, terraces and meadows sit alongside views of the river landscape. This means the focus is firmly on nature and scenery, without describing the park merely as a viewpoint.

The city park is also home to a hydraulic ram pump. It is compared with a ram pump dating from around 300 years ago, bringing technical history into the park landscape. It can be viewed from the Elbe Cycle Route. If you plan to include the cycle route in your day, you will find a specific point of technical interest here, as well as views of the landscape.

Animal Encounters at the Small Animal Zoo

Strehla Small Animal Zoo offers up-close animal experiences, including feeding and petting dwarf goats. There are also ponies and alpacas, as well as a playground and a pond; the zoo adjoins a park. This makes it quite different from the quieter park landscape: animals and direct encounters with them take centre stage here.

Animal populations can change over time. Before planning a specific visit, check which animals can currently be seen.

More cultural and culinary experiences in the wider Meißen destination

In the wider Meißen destination, Strehla’s nature and animal experiences are complemented by a dedicated cultural and culinary offering. At the visitor centre of the State Porcelain Manufactory Meissen, you can see how Meissen porcelain is shaped and painted. The Meißen City Museum offers a different perspective: historical models illustrate the city’s development, while large exhibits explore viticulture, Elbe fishing and navigation. The museum also displays typical Meissen porcelain and ceramic products. It is located in the former Franciscan monastery in the heart of the Old Town and presents temporary exhibitions that change twice a year alongside its permanent exhibition. Meißen thus brings together an insight into porcelain production and a city history collection covering a range of subjects.

Albrechtsburg Castle offers another way to explore history. It tells the story of the Wettin princely dynasty, with an exhibition featuring virtual presentations and interactive media stations. The HistoPad adds an interactive discovery tour, augmented reality and 3D presentations. Nine time portals take visitors back as far as the 15th century. Exhibition arrangements may change; check the latest information when planning a visit.

For wine lovers, there are opportunities to taste Meissen wine in the city of Meißen and in the surrounding Elbe wine villages along the river. From spring to autumn, the Meissen Wine Pavilion on the market square invites visitors to taste top Saxon wines daily. The culinary city tour offers another kind of indulgence: the bookable experience includes two savoury samples and one sweet sample, a small glass of Meissen wine, and two samples of local beer. As the pavilion season is limited and booking details may change, check the information in advance for your planned date.

The cultural and culinary offerings in the wider Meißen destination provide a distinct complement to choosing where to stay. Your search can therefore focus on which experiences matter most for your trip.
