Around the market square and town hall, an ensemble in Nossen’s town centre is almost entirely protected as a historic monument. There is also the history of Nossen Castle and trails to explore on foot or by bike. When planning your trip, it is worth considering these highlights separately—and factoring in the castle’s long closure early on.

Townscape, Church and Castle History

The town church is a rebuilt Baroque hall church. Two portals of considerable art-historical value and carved elements from the former Altzella Monastery have been incorporated into the building. The church thus brings together Baroque architecture and older monastic craftsmanship; the origins of the reused elements also point to Altzella.

The history of Nossen Castle dates back to the 12th century, and the museum is dedicated to this history. Museum exhibits include a reconstructed torture chamber and modern cells from the period when the castle served as a prison. For planning your visit, the current status is decisive: Nossen Castle is closed from 4 November 2024 to 31 December 2032 for renovation and the redesign of the museum concept. Take this closure period into account if you want the castle and museum to be the focus of your trip.

Compare Cycling and Hiking Trails

The Ketzerbachtal Trail starts in Nossen at the Pöppelmann Bridge on the Freiberger Mulde and runs to Leuben. You can use it on foot or by bike. Along the Ketzerbach stream, the route combines nature experiences with cultural highlights and a viewpoint. A short detour to Radewitzer Höhe offers panoramic views and adds another viewpoint to the route.

For cyclists, the Muldetal Cycle Route is another landmark: Nossen Castle lies along the route, which connects to the Elbe Cycle Route at Döbeln. Unlike the Ketzerbachtal Trail, which starts in Nossen and ends in Leuben, this route provides a connection to the Elbe Cycle Route. On the Muldental Hiking Trail and Luther Access Route, waypoints serve as guides: from the Kloster Altzella junction, they lead through Herrenaue towards Gleisberg and onward to Döbeln. These starting points, destinations and connections help you choose the type of route that best suits your plans.

Forest and Herb Experiences

The Rodigt Forest Experience includes the Rodigt Tower, a wooden tipi and quiet areas. This offers another theme to explore alongside the trails and historic townscape.

At Altzella Monastery Park, herb specialist Koreen Vetter offers seminars, herbal courses, fasting evenings and programmes for school classes. Individual offerings may vary, so check which format suits your travel dates before making plans.

Getting There and Parking

For travel by car, the Nossen-Nord and Nossen-Ost exits on the A14 and the Siebenlehn exit on the A4 are important reference points. As signposting can change, check the signs for your route before setting off.

The Grüner Weg car park, about 300 metres from the castle, is considered a more affordable nearby parking option. Parking conditions may change; check them before your visit. When choosing accommodation in Nossen, the town’s history and the trails described here can offer different focuses for your stay. The castle itself cannot be visited during the stated closure period.
