Baroque and Gardens in Ludwigsburg
Ludwigsburg Residenzschloss is one of the largest Baroque buildings in Europe to have been preserved in its original form. In the city, this outstanding building is complemented by Blühendes Barock, a garden show with a fairytale garden. Those interested in culture and landscaped gardens will find two different ways to explore Ludwigsburg here: the palace’s Baroque architecture and the garden with its fairytale motifs.
The district of Ludwigsburg is nestled in the Neckar Valley, between Stromberg, Strohgäu and the Löwenstein Mountains. Along the Neckar and Enz rivers, terraced steep-slope vineyards shape the landscape. The district thus offers Baroque cultural heritage and a landscape shaped by winegrowing as two distinct themes to explore.
Celtic Trails and Literary Stops
The Celtic Trail connects nine significant Celtic-era finds along a route of about 35 kilometers through the district. The Keltenweg-AR app brings the nine sites to life with interactive VR and AR elements. The Hochdorf/Enz Celtic Museum offers another perspective: its exhibits include a lavish burial chamber faithfully reconstructed from the original, belonging to a Celtic prince, as well as insights into the everyday life and crafts of early Celtic people.
With a different focus, the Wein-Lese-Weg runs through the Schiller town of Marbach and the Bottwar Valley; its total length is 35 kilometers. There are 15 literary stops along the route. The two routes can be distinguished by their themes: archaeological finds are the focus of the Celtic Trail, while the Wein-Lese-Weg focuses on literature.
Winegrowing and Routes through the Steep-Slope Vineyards
Winegrowing has been a tradition in the district for centuries. More than 150 winegrowing businesses, over 2,000 hectares of planted vineyards and six wine cooperatives give an idea of its scale. Those wishing to learn more about winegrowing and winemaking can choose from routes in a variety of formats.
The WeinErlebnisWeg Wunnenstein is a walking route about four kilometers long. Along the way are 60 illustrated information boards about winegrowing and winemaking; there are also viewpoints, restaurants, seating areas, barbecue spots and Wengertschützen huts. The wine education trail on Geigersberg in Sachsenheim is shorter, at 1.9 kilometers, and forms a circular route. Its information boards cover nature and wine culture, and there are also rest areas. The routes’ lengths and topics give you a practical basis for choosing between these two wine trails.
The landscapes can also be explored on foot along routes of varying lengths. The Milchsäules circular trail is 12.5 kilometers long and runs from Enzweihingen to Hochdorf on forest and field paths and through orchards. The 15.4-kilometer circular route at Rosswager Halde begins and ends in Vaihingen an der Enz and passes through the steep-slope vineyards of Rosswager Halde. The routes therefore showcase two different landscapes: orchards, forest and field paths on one, steep vineyards on the other.
Cycling through the District
The district’s cycle routes pass Celtic landmarks, historic mills and steep-slope vineyards, as well as running through river valleys; there are also suitable options for e-bike riders. The Neckar Valley Cycle Route is about 350 kilometers long, almost completely flat and runs steadily downhill. It is also considered suitable for novice cyclists and families with children, and in the district it passes the most beautiful vineyard viewpoints along the steep slopes.
The 162-kilometer Anniversary Cycle Route covers a different scale, passing through 21 municipalities in the district. It has been fully signposted since summer 2025. When comparing the routes, their lengths and landscapes offer different points of reference: from the Neckar Valley Cycle Route, with its described characteristics, to the Anniversary Cycle Route, which connects numerous municipalities.
When choosing accommodation, you can first consider which focus interests you most: the palace and garden in Ludwigsburg, Celtic history, winegrowing, or cycling and hiking trails in the district. This way, your search is guided by the kind of stay you are planning rather than by a single attraction.
