Marbach am Neckar sits high above the Neckar, surrounded by vineyards and orchards. Its historic old town, literary history and trails through the vineyards offer different ways to enjoy a stay. When planning, consider whether you mainly want to visit the places associated with Schiller and the museums, or also set aside time for a longer hike: the marked trails differ considerably in length and estimated duration.

Old Town and Views over the Neckar

The historic old town is characterized by half-timbered houses, Holdergassen lanes, towers and fountains. It also features individual buildings and memorial sites that reveal different aspects of the town’s history. The town wall is thought to have been built in the late 12th century. In the 13th century, it was expanded into a fortified complex with an outer wall and moat.

The viewing platform on the Wein-Lese-Weg offers a different perspective on Marbach. From there, you can see the Neckar, Marbach’s old town, Benningen and the steep vineyards of the Neckar Valley. The viewpoint combines views of the town with the wine-growing landscape around Marbach. The Marbach Quadrant also provides a distinctive feature: this mechanical and optical installation commemorates Tobias Mayer and was inaugurated on the 250th anniversary of the astronomer’s death. It is fully functional, both mechanically and optically.

Schiller and the Literary Museums

Friedrich Schiller’s birthplace is a typical craftsman’s house from the 1690s with a trapezoidal floor plan. It opened as a memorial in 1859 and is one of the oldest literary memorial sites in the German-speaking world. Seeing the house adds a specific place from Schiller’s life story to a visit to the old town.

The Schiller National Museum and the Museum of Modern Literature are located on Schillerhöhe. Both museums offer regular guided tours as well as tours that can be booked individually. Check the current exhibition and the availability of tours before your visit. This lets you plan your museum visit deliberately, rather than assuming a tour will be available at short notice.

The museums of the German Literature Archive Marbach are considered accessible, although not every exhibition is fully accessible. Special tours and accompanied individual visits are available for visitors with disabilities. If access to a particular exhibition is important for your plans, check in advance which option is suitable.

Three Trails with Different Timeframes

The marked Marbach Circular Route 2 links the old town and vineyards over six kilometers; the estimated duration is one hour and 40 minutes. This makes it the shortest of the three trails mentioned here, with the shortest stated walking time as well. The marked Marbach Circular Route 1 is a 10.2-kilometer loop with an estimated duration of two hours and 45 minutes. Both figures can help you weigh the scope of a hiking day against your plans to visit the old town or museums.

The marked Wein-Lese-Weg from Marbach is 11.5 kilometers long, with an estimated duration of three hours and three minutes. The viewing platform along the trail also offers views of the Neckar, the old town, Benningen and the steep vineyards. Compared with the two circular routes, this is the longest of the three trails mentioned and has the longest estimated duration. Your choice can therefore depend on how much time you want to set aside for hiking alongside visits to cultural sites.

Getting There and Practical Planning

The S4 suburban train connects Marbach with Stuttgart and Backnang. The old town and Schiller’s birthplace are each a five-minute walk from the station. Check the current timetable before traveling. If you are planning a guided tour or museum visit, also check the latest availability and exhibition information. This lets you fit walks through town, a visit to Schillerhöhe and a hike into a suitable timeframe without needing to include all three in the same day.
