Renaissance art, historic fortifications and routes along the Enz offer different ways to shape a stay in Bietigheim-Bissingen. If you are interested in architectural history, you will find striking examples ranging from the medieval townscape to the Renaissance. Along the routes, the focus is instead on the river, steep vineyard slopes and the history of rafting. You can choose your accommodation to suit the topics that interest you most during your stay.
Discover the town’s history and Renaissance art
The town fortifications of Bietigheim date back to 1364. The town wall and battlement walk were restored in 1984. A notable building from a later period is the Hornmoldhaus: the Hornmold family had it built in 1535/36. Its almost completely preserved Renaissance interior paintings make the house a special destination for anyone interested in historic design.
The Old Enz Bridge also tells the story of the town’s architectural history. It was built between 1463 and 1467 under the direction of Aberlin Jörg. Together with the fortifications and the Hornmoldhaus, it illustrates different aspects of historic architecture. More than 300 heads adorn the façade of Villa Visconti. The Bietigheim-Bissingen Municipal Gallery adds an artistic dimension to these themes: it is located in Bietigheim’s old town, at the upper end of the Hauptstraße pedestrian zone and opposite the palace.
Plan your gallery visit and routes
You can consider two travel options for getting to the Municipal Gallery: it is about an eight-minute walk from Ellental station. From Bietigheim-Bissingen railway station, bus services continue from the central bus station (ZOB). The approximate walking time from Ellental helps you plan your schedule; for the rest of the journey, the bus connection from the ZOB is another option.
If you prefer spending time outdoors, you can combine the town’s history with landscapes and riverside scenery. The bwegt hiking trail links the old towns of Bietigheim and Besigheim, follows the Enz and crosses terraced steep vineyard slopes in the Enz Valley. This offers a different perspective from the historic buildings in town: here, the river and vineyards shape the route. The Lug viewpoint is on the 3B Steillagentour.
Rafting, vineyards and more leisure ideas
The Flößerweg (Rafters’ Trail) runs along the Enz from Besigheim railway station to Bissingen and is 15 kilometres long. Its 17 information boards cover rafting and the timber trade on the Enz from the 14th to the 19th century. The trail thus combines a specific route with a topic that sheds light on how the river was used over several centuries.
The model teaching garden and the eco-hut with its green roof offer further highlights. Both were created for the 1989 State Garden Show. For a different kind of leisure activity, the facilities at the Hallenbad am Viadukt indoor swimming pool include a 30 °C saltwater outdoor pool; check the latest details before your visit. Alongside culture and walking routes, gardens and swimming are also possible interests to consider when planning your stay.
Plan your stay around your interests
For a specific hotel, check its location and amenities against the details of the individual offer. A wider regional perspective can also help with your choice: in the wider destination of Ludwigsburg, Ludwigsburg Residential Palace is one of Europe’s largest Baroque buildings preserved in its original form. Terraced steep vineyard slopes along the Neckar and Enz also shape the landscape of Ludwigsburg district.
