In Kornwestheim, changing exhibitions on contemporary art and current topics sit alongside collections on the town’s history. There are also two parks of different sizes and with different amenities. This mix offers a range of ways to shape your stay around your cultural interests or your desire to spend time outdoors.
Art and Guided Tours at the Kleihues-Bau
The museum in the Kleihues-Bau presents changing exhibitions focused on contemporary art and current topics. The exhibitions change, so if you are interested in a particular subject, you can check the current program before your visit. The museum’s art collection includes around 3,000 works, predominantly German art from the 20th and 21st centuries. The collection and the changing exhibition program therefore offer two different ways to explore: a view of art spanning several decades and insights into current topics.
Curator-led tours, themed tours and family tours are offered for all exhibitions. If a guided tour is important to your plans, check the museum for current dates and arrangements. The Kleihues-Bau itself also has a historic connection: in 2017, it was added to the list of cultural monuments.
Urban History and Salamander
The Cultural History Collection of the City of Kornwestheim comprises around 30,000 objects and paints a multifaceted picture of the town’s history. A significant part of it is the Salamander collection, with objects from the former Kornwestheim shoe factory, Salamander. These include production sewing machines, shoes dating from 1890 to the present, Lurchi promotional items and tableware from the factory canteen. Together, the objects illustrate the history of Salamander AG in many different ways. Alongside the art collection, this creates a distinct focus on local cultural and industrial history.
The North WĂĽrttemberg School Museum offers a different kind of look back: in a historic classroom, visitors can experience a lesson as it was taught in the past. The museum also attracts school classes from near and far. Check the current visitor arrangements in advance if you would like to include this in your plans.
Green Spaces and Getting Your Bearings
Opened in 1938, the Stadtgarten covers around 2.5 hectares. Its features include a concert shell, a playground and numerous places to relax among seasonally designed plantings. The Salamander Stadtpark is larger, at 6.7 hectares; there is a large playground in its eastern section. The two parks thus offer different opportunities for a break outdoors, with each of the playgrounds mentioned belonging to a specific park.
A prominent landmark visible from afar, the 48-meter-high town hall tower defines Kornwestheim’s skyline; it can be seen beyond the district boundary. If you would like to take in art while walking around town, a leaflet recommends a route for an art-filled stroll through Kornwestheim. Check locally before your trip to see whether the leaflet is available.
The distance to the S-Bahn station provides a clear point of reference for getting to the museum: Kornwestheim station is 700 meters from the museum in the Kleihues-Bau. Conditions along the route may change. Art, urban history and green spaces offer different focal points for planning your stay; which one you choose to prioritize depends on what you would like to discover during your visit.
