Vaihingen an der Enz can be explored on short walks through the town and is also a starting point for longer cycling routes: the town walks take you independently through the old town and along the Enz, while the VAI-Tour circular route covers almost 50 kilometres. When planning, you can first decide whether you want to focus on history and wine, hiking or a cycling trip.
Explore the old town and the Enz on foot
The town walks let you explore the old town and the banks of the Enz independently. The municipal walks are between one and three kilometres long, with information boards at every stop. A specific route along the Enz starts at the market square and follows the former mill channel and the Upper Mill to the banks of the Enz. The walks and the more precisely described Enz route therefore offer different starting points for a stroll. The stated distances help you gauge the length of each route, while the boards at the stops provide additional orientation.
History, guided tours and museum
Vaihingen an der Enz was founded at the beginning of the 13th century and was severely affected by a town fire in 1693. A themed guided tour links the Enz with the Powder Tower, the Haspel Tower, the church and the castle, as well as the poorhouse, St Peter’s Church and Judengasse. If you would like to look beyond the old town, you can also consider guided tours in the eight districts, which introduce the development of their respective historic centres. As the visitor programme may change, it is worth checking the latest dates in advance.
The Bonbon Museum in Kleinglattbach offers a different perspective on cultural history. The 300-square-metre exhibition includes sweets, tins, production machinery and advertising materials. Its timeline stretches from the invention of sweets in the Middle East in the 8th century to factory production in the 20th century. This offers a distinct focus alongside local history and architecture. If you plan to visit the museum, check the current visitor information beforehand.
Winegrowing and experiences in the vineyards
Vaihingen an der Enz has more than 250 hectares of vineyards. In 1987, the OIV designated the town an “International City of Vine and Wine”. On predominantly steep, partly terraced slopes in the Enz Valley and the Stromberg, winegrowers cultivate Württemberg grape varieties. Wine can also be a theme for guided experiences, including a tour along the wine trail, wine experiences in Roßwag and a seminar in sensory appreciation. If you would like to combine one of these events with your trip, check the latest dates and programme details.
Compare cycling routes and hikes
The VAI-Tour is a circular cycling route just under 50 kilometres long. It starts at the market square and follows the Enz towards RoĂźwag. There is a northern option measuring 24.4 kilometres and a southern option measuring 25.4 kilometres. The two options are similar in length; the full circular route covers a greater distance. The Stromberg-Murrtal Cycle Path also passes through Vaihingen in stages: the third stage runs from Maulbronn through the winegrowing villages of SchĂĽtzingen, GĂĽndelbach and Horrheim to Vaihingen. The fourth stage leads from there via Bietigheim-Bissingen into the Neckar Valley, ending in Marbach am Neckar.
For hikers, marked routes offer views across vineyards, paths through natural landscapes and visits to historic half-timbered villages. Alongside cycling routes, there are also options for exploring on foot, with different experiences depending on the landscapes and destinations described.
Swimming as another part of your trip
The Enztalbad is described as a family-friendly complex. The outdoor pool area has a 50-metre pool, a slide for non-swimmers, a children’s area and a sunbathing lawn; there are also facilities for beach volleyball, table tennis and chess. The indoor pool adds a 25-metre pool, regular aqua-jogging and swimming classes, and a 28-degree swimming pool designed for relaxation. Outdoor pool opening and the indoor pool programme may change, so check current opening times and course dates before your visit.
