Kirchheim am Neckar combines steep vineyards overlooking the river with hiking trails, cycling and a local wine tradition. When planning your stay, consider whether you want to focus on hiking, cycling, wine or architecture. The trails vary in length and scenery; if you plan to enjoy wine at a wine stand or hire a bicycle, the specific date or the station’s current status is an important planning consideration.
Vineyards and Hiking Trails
Kapellenberg lies beside a sharp bend in the Neckar and is among the steepest vineyard sites in the region. The Kapellenberg circuit follows vineyard terraces along the Neckar loop, offering views of the Neckar Valley and the sinter rocks on the riverbank. At six kilometers, it is shorter than the Kirchheim hiking trail. It includes two climbs and a descent via vineyard steps.
The marked Kirchheim hiking trail is a 10-kilometer loop that takes approximately two and a half hours. It passes through vineyards and orchards and by scenic viewpoints, including an old vineyard hut and the Umlaufberg, a hill formed by a former loop of the Neckar. The trail also passes the Trauf natural monument and the Wasen nature reserve, considered one of the last remnants of floodplain forest along the Neckar. The two routes therefore differ not only in length but also in the landscapes they connect along the way.
Terrace Wine and Sunday Tastings
The vineyards are also part of the area’s agricultural history: since 2019, the municipality has cultivated previously fallow terrace plots and produced its own terrace wines. A wine tasting is held at the Kirchheim wine terrace almost every Sunday. Local associations and members of the WG Stromberg-Zabergäu present their wines there; the tasting runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check the date before your visit.
Cycling and the Neckar
Kirchheim lies directly on the Neckar Valley Cycle Route. The surrounding landscape is shaped by vineyards, fields and forests, and invites you to take longer rides. Cycling on the Neckar Valley Cycle Route in Kirchheim is also a way to enjoy nature and relaxation.
RegioRadStuttgart stations in Kirchheim support one-way trips with a return journey by S-Bahn. Check the current station status before making plans. Canoeing is also a sport and leisure option on the stretch of the Neckar between Stuttgart and Kirchheim am Neckar. Alongside hiking, this gives you more ways to make the river and landscape the focus of your trip.
Architecture and History
St. Mauritius Church adds architectural history to the area’s landscape and route offerings. It began as a Romanesque choir-tower church; pointed Gothic windows and a Gothic portal were added later. The building also has a choir net vault and a rib-vaulted sacristy. This sequence combines an original Romanesque design with later Gothic features, creating a different focal point from the vineyard landscape.
In the wider destination of Ludwigsburg
The wider destination of Ludwigsburg offers further cultural attractions alongside Kirchheim’s river and wine landscapes. Ludwigsburg Residential Palace is one of Europe’s largest Baroque buildings preserved in its original state. The Celtic Trail offers another focus: it links nine important Celtic-era finds along a route of about 35 kilometers through the district of Ludwigsburg. The Hochdorf/Enz Celtic Museum includes a faithful replica of the lavish burial chamber of the Celtic prince and offers insights into the daily life and crafts of early Celtic people.
