At Mundelsheim’s Käsberg, terraced vineyards meet sweeping views over a bend in the Neckar. Käsberg is designated an important natural monument in Württemberg. Numerous small vineyard terraces climb about 100 metres up the shell limestone slope from the Neckar Valley floor. You can explore the landscape and local history in Mundelsheim along several trails with different routes.

Vineyard Terraces and the Neckar Bend

From Käsbergkanzel, panoramic views extend across the entire Mundelsheim bend in the Neckar. The viewpoint also offers a spot for a picnic. To get a closer look at the terraced slope, take the 5.1-kilometre Käsberg circular trail. This themed circular trail runs along the slope of the Mundelsheim bend in the Neckar and passes through the historic town centre, where it goes by half-timbered houses and gatehouses. The route therefore showcases both the vineyard landscape and the historic buildings.

For a shorter route focused on local history, there is the Historic Circular Walk: it takes about 60 minutes and describes 24 sites in the town centre, as well as other sites outdoors. Mundelsheim also has six wine and fruit trails. The two walks can be compared using different details: the Käsberg circular trail has a stated distance of 5.1 kilometres, while the Historic Circular Walk has an approximate duration. Check the trail markers locally; trail conditions can change seasonally.

Church, Roman Traces and Crafts

Kilianskirche contains richly painted late Gothic frescoes dating from 1460 to 1470. Visits can be arranged in advance through the parish house; agree on a time beforehand. On the Ottmarsheimer Höhe site is an excavated Roman cellar with explanatory text and image panels. The remains of a Mithras temple lie about 50 metres to the west. The cellar and temple are freely accessible via the Ottmarsheimer Höhe industrial estate. Both sites can also be reached via Wine and Fruit Trail 3. Check access arrangements before setting out and trail conditions before a tour.

Traditional crafts are also featured in Mundelsheim’s exhibitions. The cooperage exhibition in the museum presents a complete workshop and historic and newer barrel-making methods. The wheelwright exhibition illustrates the processes and products of traditional wheelwrighting. The exhibition in the Stiftsscheuer opens on market days and during local festivals; groups can visit by prior arrangement. Check opening hours and visitor arrangements before your visit.

Experience Winegrowing

At the Käsbergkeller, grapes from around 600 Mundelsheim winegrowers are processed together. Wine tastings and visits are available by arrangement; book a time in advance. The Käsbergkeller wine experience trail in Mundelsheim complements the vineyard views with four interactive stations. They cover the structure of the vine, winemaking, seasonal work in the vineyard and the animals that live among the vineyards. The topic of wine therefore spans everything from the terraced slope to the work processes and habitats associated with winegrowing.
