A one-kilometre forest discovery trail, a 10.3-kilometre agricultural themed trail and a 3.5-kilometre rock art route: trails in Essonne offer very different experiences. They are complemented by riverside landscapes, vast natural areas and cultural sites that each bring history to life in their own way.

Themed trails and routes for different interests

The Sentier d’interprétation agricole is an easy 10.3-kilometre trail. Eight information panels explore agricultural themes, and an activity booklet for children complements the walk. The Sentier de découverte sur la forêt explores the subject of forests over one kilometre and is accessible to people with mobility, visual, hearing or intellectual disabilities. The 3.5-kilometre Sentier de découverte sur l’art rupestre focuses on rock art, from the Palaeolithic to the present day. The length and subject matter clearly distinguish these three trails.

Cycling routes also offer different profiles: the Circuits des artistes comprise three routes—a 54-kilometre route for hybrid bikes (VTC), a 55-kilometre mountain-bike route and a shorter 45-kilometre version. The Entre Juine et Renarde route offers 28 kilometres of marked trails in the Juine Valley. Alongside the themed discovery trails, these longer distances provide further options for planning a route.

Rivers, forests and varied landscapes

Essonne has 49,000 hectares of natural areas, including 42,000 hectares of forest. More than 400 kilometres of rivers and 2,500 kilometres of trails also shape the landscape. The rivers that cross the département include the Seine, the Juine, the Orge, the Yerres and the Essonne. These figures give an idea of the region’s varied landscapes, with each place offering its own particular attractions.

One example is the 20-hectare Domaine départemental de Montauger. Orchards, ponds, marshes, slopes, pools and streams create a varied ecological landscape. The Parc naturel régional du Gâtinais français extends beyond the département’s boundaries: 36 of its municipalities are in Essonne and 33 in Seine-et-Marne.

Cultural sites with stories of their own

Dourdan and Étampes are considered royal towns in Essonne. In Dourdan, the house museum at the Château de Dourdan is housed in an 18th-century salt storehouse. Its collections explore local history, historic furniture and the castle. The Église Saint-Sulpice de Favières showcases another chapter in architectural history: the church is an example of Rayonnant Gothic architecture and has 13th-century stained-glass windows and a 12th-century chapel of miracles.

The Domaine départemental de Chamarande is a historic monument site and includes a 98-hectare Jardin remarquable. At the Tour de Montlhéry, 138 steps lead to a viewpoint overlooking Montlhéry and the surrounding area. As visitor arrangements may change, it is advisable to check them before visiting.

The Musée français de la Photographie offers another perspective, with more than 25,000 objects, one million photographs, a library and a unique collection of technical documentation. The Île de Loisirs d’Étampes adds activities such as wave swimming, walking and fitness routes, mini-golf, archery, climbing and a toboggan run to the cultural offering. The Île de Loisirs Le Port aux Cerises in Draveil offers sports and leisure activities year-round. For activities with operating arrangements that may vary, it is worth checking the latest information before visiting.

Getting there and finding your way

For rail travel, the TGV station at Massy provides a connection to the European rail network; timetables and connections may change, so check current travel times. The A6 and A10 motorways cross Essonne, while Orly Airport lies north of the département. Whether your trip focuses on trails, landscapes or cultural sites, these varied themes can help you shape your itinerary.
