The “Du Vaularon aux Fauvettes” hiking trail follows the Vaularon through Bures-sur-Yvette and Gometz-le-Châtel. At 7.5 kilometres, it offers a clear focus on outdoor activity. Other highlights include a variety of nature themes and historic cultural sites: a landscaped public park, a mosaic of diverse habitats, a 13th-century church and a cultural centre with activities for different age groups. Bures-sur-Yvette can therefore be viewed as a destination with distinct, clearly defined interests.
Parkland and diverse habitats
Parc de la Grande Maison is a classified public park. It includes a meadow with an ornamental pond and a natural water jet, woodland, and landscaped areas with a central path and regularly arranged flower beds. The combination of open spaces, woodland and landscaped areas gives the park its own distinctive character. Individual design elements may change.
The Espace Naturel Sensible de la Guyonnerie offers a different focus: its mosaic of habitats includes wetlands as well as wooded, shrub-covered, open and semi-open areas. The contrast with Parc de la Grande Maison lies in the emphasis: here, different habitat types define the nature experience; there, a park with landscaped features takes centre stage.
Hiking along the Vaularon
The “Du Vaularon aux Fauvettes” hike is 7.5 kilometres long and follows the Vaularon through Bures-sur-Yvette and Gometz-le-Châtel. The route therefore has both a specific length and a named itinerary through two municipalities. Treat it as a separate activity; it calls for a different kind of planning than a visit to the park or a cultural event. Check the route details before setting out.
Church, mill and cultural programme
Église Saint-Matthieu is the oldest building in Bures-sur-Yvette and was built in the 13th century. It bears the Île-de-France region’s “Patrimoine d’intérêt régional” regional heritage designation. The church is also home to the bronze bell Marie-Louise, which was christened in 1756 and is listed as a historic monument. The two designations apply at different levels: the regional label applies to the church, while the historic monument listing applies to the bell.
Moulin Guibert, also known as Grand Moulin de Bures, is mentioned in texts dating from 1382 and 1402. It is currently the only mill in the region to use the water power of the Yvette as an energy source. The mill therefore connects historical references with the theme of hydropower.
Centre Culturel Marcel Pagnol complements the historical themes with performances for a general audience as well as for children and young people. Its offerings also include workshops, exhibitions and a film club. The cultural range thus extends from architectural and local history to events and various cultural formats. Programmes and dates may change; check the current events programme in advance.
