Épinay-sur-Orge offers a clear starting point for planning your trip: the PR des Trois Rivières hiking trail follows three rivers and takes about three hours on foot. There is also a long church history, named stretches of river, the Parc des Templiers, and cultural and leisure activities. This allows you to decide in advance whether hiking, architecture, or a range of different activities should be the focus of your stay.
Hiking along the Yvette, Orge, and Rouillon
The PR des Trois Rivières is about 10.7 kilometers long and takes around three hours on foot. Keep the duration in mind as walking time, and plan breaks at your own pace. The route follows the Yvette, the Orge, and the Rouillon. The Maison aux Tourelles in Épinay-sur-Orge is one of the places to discover along the way. The hiking trail can be reached from Épinay-sur-Orge RER C station and the T12 tram line. Check the transport connections again before your trip.
Rivers and landmarks
The Orge and the Yvette each have clearly named landmarks in Épinay-sur-Orge. In the south, the Orge crosses the Parc de Perray-Vaucluse and runs through the Parc du Breuil to the D257 road in the direction of Morsang-sur-Orge. The Yvette flows north of Épinay-sur-Orge and joins the Orge within the municipality, near the Centre commercial des Rossays. The two rivers thus mark distinct landmarks: the Orge in the south, alongside the named parks, and the Yvette in the north at the confluence.
Saint-Leu-Saint-Gilles Church
The history of Saint-Leu-Saint-Gilles Church at the site of today’s church dates back to 811, when the first church was built there. Its architectural features include a Romanesque portal with a sculpted tympanum; the church is one of the Romanesque churches in the Essonne department. The tympanum is the sculpted panel of the portal, a specific detail in addition to the church’s Romanesque style. The bell also bears an inscription dating from 1561 and has been listed as a protected object since September 30, 1911. The dates refer to different things: 811 to the first church at the site, 1561 to the bell inscription, and 1911 to the bell’s protection as an object.
Leisure and culture
The Parc des Templiers offers walking paths, fitness trails, and play areas for children. At the P’tit Train des Templiers, electric, thermal-powered, and steam-powered model trains, as well as vélorails, run on a circuit of about 550 meters; children and adults can ride around the course. At about 550 meters, this circuit is considerably shorter than the hiking trail, which is about 10.7 kilometers long.
The Association des Peintres et Sculpteurs d’Épinay-sur-Orge holds an annual art exhibition. Rando Plus Loisirs offers walking trips and cultural excursions. If the art exhibition is important to your trip, check the event dates in advance.
