Lisses combines a natural area that spans several municipalities with a distinctive cultural and historical landmark. The Cirque de l’Essonne stretches across Lisses, Corbeil-Essonnes and Villabé; the Église Saint-Germain-Saint-Vincent offers a different focus. Visitors can therefore plan around two distinct interests: a landscape with diverse habitats and species, and the history and features of a church.
Landscape and biodiversity
The Cirque covers 130 hectares and is a mosaic of natural habitats. These include wetlands, meadows, woodland and limestone slopes. The area thus brings together open, wooded, wetland and limestone environments rather than comprising just one type of landscape. A municipal biodiversity description lists 54 bird species, 10 mammal species, 26 butterfly species and 28 dragonfly species. These figures reflect the diversity of species across several groups. Nature enthusiasts can focus on the different habitats or on particular groups of animals.
Three trails are provided at the Cirque. They are intended to make this natural heritage accessible while protecting sensitive habitats. Another natural site, the Domaine départemental de Montauger in Lisses, is designated an Espace naturel sensible (ENS). It is open to all visitors; visits can be arranged freely, provided the site is protected. Check for any temporary notices before your visit. The difference lies in how you visit: the Cirque has three trails to its natural heritage, which are intended to protect sensitive habitats; visits to Montauger can be arranged freely, provided the site is respected.
Outdoor exercise
Fit’Lisses is a public outdoor fitness trail for physical activity. The 2022 municipal guide lists 13 stations, three of which are stated to be accessible to people with reduced mobility. The trail also includes a Finnish track made of peat and soft wood chips, which allows for low-impact running. The facilities are described in the 2022 municipal guide; as the layout may change, check the latest information before your visit. The stations and track offer different ways to exercise along the same trail.
Church and architectural history
The Église Saint-Germain-Saint-Vincent dates from the 15th to 16th century and is listed as a historic monument. Its portal features a sculpted tympanum. A tympanum is the sculpted field of a portal, making it a distinctive architectural detail of the church. Since 1736, the church has had a two-sided, three-legged lectern made of wrought iron. The church thus brings together a distinctive portal design and a piece of handcrafted furnishings that has been part of its collection for centuries. Its construction period, historic monument status, portal and lectern form a clearly defined cultural and historical focus alongside Lisses’s natural attractions.
