Athis-Mons combines local history with themes related to the Seine and nature. Two audio trails focus on different subjects; historic buildings and the Coteau des Vignes natural area add to the picture. When planning, the different route lengths and time estimates for the trails are particularly useful.
Two audio trails, two time frames
The “Un p’tit tour en banlieue” audio trail is designed as a self-guided visit. It is six kilometres long, takes approximately two hours and includes 22 stops with commentary. These include holiday villas, the Ferme de Mons, the banks of the Seine, Château d’Athis and the HBM garden city. The stops bring together different aspects of local history and architecture along a longer route.
“En Seine!” runs for 2.5 kilometres along the Seine between Athis-Mons and Ablon. The trail is estimated to take around an hour and a half; its focus is the use of the river in the 19th century. It was created in 2021 by pupils in the CM1 class at École Saint-Exupéry in Athis-Mons. Compared with the other trail, “En Seine!” is the shorter route, with a clear focus on the river, while “Un p’tit tour en banlieue” has more stops with commentary and a longer stated duration.
Buildings and their history
Château d’Athis is protected as a historic monument. It was listed by decree on 19 October 1928. The Chapelle du collège Saint-Charles offers a different architectural feature: visible pointed arch ribs made of reinforced concrete and stained-glass windows by the Mauméjean workshop define its design. The chapel also holds the designation “Architecture contemporaine remarquable”.
The Église Saint-Denis also contains protected objects. The tombstone of Jean d’Athis dates from the 13th century and was listed as a protected object on 6 April 1979. A balustrade in the organ gallery was classified as a protected object on 30 September 1911. Another detail can be found at Château d’Avaucourt: the retaining wall of the rear terrace contains a rusticated nymphaeum dating from the 17th century.
Aviation, heritage and events
The Musée Delta is dedicated to aviation, particularly the delta wing and Nicolas Roland Payen, one of its inventors. Visitors can board the fourth Concorde aircraft to be built. As well as historic buildings, Athis-Mons therefore offers an insight into the history of aviation.
A puzzle and discovery trail in the Noyer Renard district offers insights into its history and architecture. The district was recognised as regional-interest heritage in 2001. The Médiathèque Simone de Beauvoir offers a different cultural programme, including exhibitions, performances, discussion events, and creative and digital workshops. These varied themes make it possible to shape a stay around architecture, aviation, local history or cultural events.
The banks of the Seine and the natural area
The 18-hectare Coteau des Vignes is designated as a sensitive natural area (ENS). It can be reached on foot from Parc d’Avaucourt via old stone steps. Its diverse flora and fauna include birds, mammals and amphibians. Parc d’Avaucourt itself has been a protected site since 1942; the Athis-Mons town hall is considered a historic monument.
At the Promenade Sinaia, where the Orge meets the Seine, there is an area with benches and semicircular tiered seating. Visitors can view the river from there. Athis-Mons therefore offers different options side by side: a natural area with diverse wildlife and plant life, and a spot at the confluence with views of the Seine and the Orge.
