Corbeil-Essonnes brings together architectural and industrial history for culture-loving travelers: a Romanesque bell tower, a historic covered market and the Moulin Hutteau, with its various industrial uses, represent different periods. There is also a hiking area, stand-up paddleboarding on the Seine and guided tours. This lets you shape your stay around the things that interest you most.

Churches, Market and Building Phases

The Église Saint-Étienne has a Romanesque bell tower dating from around 1100 and was classified as a historic monument by decree on March 25, 1930. The covered market, Marché couvert, was listed as a historic monument by decree on February 16, 1987. At the Cathédrale Saint-Spire, you can trace its different construction phases: the nave dates from the 12th century, while the vaults and choir were not completed until the 15th century. The cathedral was classified as a historic monument in 1840. You can arrange guided tours through the parish office.

Moulin Hutteau: Changing Industrial Uses

Moulin Hutteau is located on a small island in a branch of the Essonne. The site once housed the royal gunpowder factory; later, Moulin Hutteau served as a grain mill, chocolate factory and detergent factory. Moulin Hutteau and the site of the former Essonnes gunpowder factory have been awarded the Île-de-France region’s “Patrimoine d’intérêt régional” label. The succession of uses shows just how much the site’s industrial function changed over time.

Landscape and Water Activities

The Cirque de l’Essonne extends across Villabé and Corbeil-Essonnes and is a popular hiking area. The Essonne Departmental Council organized numerous events and awareness-raising activities there. The GR2 long-distance footpath, which follows the winding course of the Seine, offers another perspective on the river landscape. Along this route, coves, woodland and protected natural areas alternate with the distinctive industrial heritage of Ris-Orangis and Corbeil-Essonnes. ASCE Voile ESPAR offers stand-up paddleboarding on the Seine throughout the year.

Guided Tours

The Grand Paris Sud Tourist Office offers a guided tour of Corbeil-Essonnes’ industrial heritage throughout the year. It covers the city’s development from the first watermills to the technological achievements of IBM and the Grands Moulins. Confirm availability before booking. A guided tour of the Stade nautique Gabriel Menut is also being offered for 2026. It covers the facility’s architecture and history, as well as behind-the-scenes areas; check the schedule before you travel.

The Commanderie Saint-Jean

The Gothic chapel of the Commanderie Saint-Jean in l’Isle lès Corbeil is the only surviving part of a major monastic complex. The complex was built in the early 13th century at the initiative of Queen Ingeborg of Denmark. It was under the authority of the Hospitaller and Military Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, now the Order of Malta. Among the rulers who visited were Louis IX and Blanche de Castille.
