A striking gateway to the Region of Murcia leads into the limestone massif of Sierra Espuña. It lies in the heart of the region, rises above 1,500 metres and features karst formations on its peaks. Forestry tracks and a signposted network of natural trails provide access on foot to large parts of the mountains. Sierra Espuña is thus both a geologically shaped landscape and a place where you can explore on footpaths.

Mountains and protected habitats

The Regional Park of Calblanque, Monte de las Cenizas and Peña del Águila offers a different natural setting. It includes 17 priority habitat types, including coastal lagoons and steppe-like grasslands. Calblanque is designated both as a regional park and as a Site of Community Importance. These examples bring the diversity of protected habitats to life: coastal lagoons and grasslands sit side by side here.

In the Calblanque area, visitors are asked to stay on the permitted paths. Taking shortcuts can damage the flora, fauna and soil. Check the official access information before your trip. This is especially useful if you would like to include protected areas in your plans.

The Regional Park of Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar also offers different ways to explore the area: it has marked walking trails and a cycle path with information boards. Observation points allow you to watch waterbirds up close. As individual facilities may change, check the latest information before your visit.

Archaeology and traditions

The Roman Theatre of Cartagena was built towards the end of the 1st century BC under Emperor Augustus and had room for around 6,000 spectators. In addition to the theatre, the complex includes the Museum of the Roman Theatre in the Palacio de Riquelme and the Church of Santa María la Vieja. The three elements form part of an integrated project; in the description of the complex, the ancient building is presented alongside the museum and church.

A different form of cultural expression takes centre stage in Caravaca de la Cruz: Los Caballos del Vino features horses wearing magnificent capes embroidered with silk and gold, processions through the streets and a timed race up the steep ascent to the town’s castle. The horses, elaborately embroidered capes and race are distinct parts of the same tradition. The Sanctuary of Vera Cruz is also associated with a recurring religious occasion: it can celebrate a Holy Year every seven years on a permanent basis.

Coast, fishing and regional routes

The Cabo de Palos–Islas Hormigas Marine Reserve has extensive Posidonia seagrass meadows and numerous historic shipwrecks. Here, an important marine habitat meets traces of maritime history. Traditional fishing takes centre stage at Las Encañizadas: the shallow-water area forms a natural connection between the Mar Menor lagoon and the Mediterranean, and traditional fishing takes place there.

Wine enthusiasts will find three certified wine routes in the Region of Murcia: Bullas, Yecla and Jumilla. Their names provide a specific regional reference for planning, without requiring you to follow a set itinerary. Together with the archaeological and landscape themes, they offer a range of interests to guide your discoveries.

For getting around, the Region of Murcia’s transport network includes trains, buses, taxis and rental vehicles. If you are looking for hotels in Murcia, nature, cultural heritage or regional traditions can serve as starting points for planning your trip.
