Inazares combines a striking mountain landscape with geological features and several named hiking trails. Different scales are relevant when planning a trip: the Dolina de Inazares near the road to the village, the Sierra de Villafuerte, and the Revolcadores massif in the surrounding area. The village is also home to a church with a long history and a patron saint’s festival whose date varies from year to year.

Mountain Landscape and Distinctive Features

The Sierra de Villafuerte lies east of Inazares. Its highest point is Villafuerte, at 1,750 metres. Inazares is surrounded by the foothills of the Sierra de Revolcadores; the Revolcadores massif is a hiking destination in the surrounding area. Because of its altitude, it remains snow-covered for several months of the year. This seasonal difference is important when planning a hike, although it does not establish a fixed period when snow can be expected.

The sky is another of the village’s reported distinctive features: according to NASA scientific estimates, the sky above Inazares is considered exceptionally clear and is described as the clearest in the Iberian Peninsula.

The Dolina de Inazares: Geology and Access

The Dolina de Inazares is considered the most representative example of this type of catalogued exokarstic landform in the Region of Murcia. Exokarstic landforms are karst features that develop at the surface. The dolina also contains deposits of Early Jurassic cephalopods, including ammonites, belemnites and Atractites. Alongside its mountain scenery, it therefore offers a specific point of geological interest.

The dolina can be reached on foot from the road to Inazares. It lies approximately 550 metres to the southwest or west-southwest of the road and about 1,500 metres before Inazares. Various paths lead towards it from the village or the road. The dolina is considered easy to access and suitable for all visitor groups; no difficulty rating is provided.

Take care when approaching in rain, snow or thunderstorms: a stream must be crossed, and the paths are unpaved. These weather-related cautions are relevant to assessing access, alongside the general description of the route as easy to access.

Hiking Trails and Directions

One route from Inazares leads to the Los Obispos geodetic summit point, at an altitude of 2,015 metres. This is a different named destination from Villafuerte, the highest point in the Sierra de Villafuerte at 1,750 metres. The route’s ascent and descent are marked with white and yellow PR trail markers.

The “En ruta por Revolcadores” hiking route begins in Inazares beside Bar El Nogal. The official mountain trail “Sendero de Montaña. Asenso al Pico del Obispo” also starts in the hamlet of Inazares. Several routes therefore begin right in the village, while Revolcadores is a hiking destination in the surrounding area.

To drive to Inazares, take the AutovĂa del Noroeste (C-415), then the C-330 towards Barranda and, after passing through Barranda, take a right-hand turnoff to Inazares. The road sequence and the turnoff after Barranda are the main reference points for finding the way.

Local History, Festival and Cuisine

The church of Inazares is dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Bari and was built in 1889. Its interior retains its original lines, as well as some of the fittings and ornaments from the time it was built. A mention of Inazares in a document from 1507 suggests that the village was already an inhabited settlement at that time.

The patron saint’s festival is celebrated in honour of Saint Nicholas. It usually falls on the second or third weekend in August, though the date may vary from year to year. If your trip is tied to the festival, check the date for your intended year before planning around it.

Migas con tropezones is considered a notable traditional dish of Inazares. Roast lamb and grilled lamb are also eaten as typical dishes during the patron saint’s festival.
