A wide bay open to the Mediterranean and 35 kilometers of coastline define Mazarron. Alongside them are protected landscapes and cultural sites with different historical focuses. When planning your trip, you can first consider whether you want your stay to center on the beach and walks, activities on the water or history. The places and activities below offer specific points to help you decide.

Beaches, coves and a distinctive coastal landscape

Mazarron’s beaches include La Reya, Bahía and El Castellar. There are also the unspoiled coves of Cala Amarilla, Playa de la Grúa, Parazuelos, Covaticas and Percheles. The beaches and coves offer opportunities for swimming and long walks by the sea. This stretch of coast is therefore of interest not only for time by the water: if you enjoy walking longer distances along the shore, that too could be a good focus for your plans.

A striking landform can be seen at the Erosiones de Bolnuevo, next to Bolnuevo Beach. There, white sandstone formations have taken on their distinctive shapes through the effects of wind and water. This sets the coastal view apart from the swimming and walking opportunities at the beaches and coves mentioned above: here, the landscape shaped by natural erosion takes center stage.

Sailing and diving by the sea

Mazarron’s marina has 200 berths. At the regatta club, competitions go hand in hand with courses where you can learn to sail or improve your skills. The club’s offerings therefore include both competition and instruction and opportunities to develop your sailing skills.

Several diving clubs in Mazarron run courses for all levels and excursions to rocky seabeds, underwater caves and underwater crevices. Sailing and diving offer different focuses: sailing includes courses and regattas among the club activities described, while diving focuses on courses and excursions to underwater landscapes. If you would like to plan your stay around an activity on the water, you can choose between these options.

Cultural history: castle, salt factory and Phoenician ships

Castillo de los Vélez de Mazarrón is designated as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Asset of Cultural Interest). This designation is made in accordance with the first transitional provision of Law 4/2007 of March 16, 2007, on the cultural heritage of the Autonomous Community of Murcia. Its architectural layout is also noteworthy: the irregular floor plan covers just over 3,000 square meters and is divided into the fortress proper and the arms courtyard. Its legal designation and spatial layout are two distinct aspects of this cultural site.

The Museo Arqueológico Factoría Romana de Salazones de Puerto de Mazarrón preserves parts of the structures of a large Roman industrial complex. Salted fish and fish sauces were produced there. The Factoría Romana de Salazones is also designated as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Asset of Cultural Interest). A visit for guided groups can be arranged by appointment in advance; arrange an appointment before your trip.

Another part of local history is explored at the Centro de Interpretación del Barco Fenicio in Puerto de Mazarrón. It is located on Avenida Tierno Galván, next to Playa de la Isla. The exhibition includes an audiovisual presentation, graphic materials, models and information panels. It covers the oldest Phoenician ships found in the Mediterranean region and the history of the Phoenicians associated with Mazarron. The exhibition also features a replica of a ship dating to the 7th century BC.

Protected nature in the Sierra de las Moreras

The Sierra de las Moreras is a coastal mountain range by the Mediterranean and a protected landscape. Golden eagles, eagle owls, peregrine falcons, kestrels and spur-thighed tortoises have been documented in the Sierra. This natural setting differs from the open bay and coastal formations: it shifts the focus from the sea to a protected mountain range and the animal species recorded there.

Plan your stay around your interests

When looking for hotels in Mazarron, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip. Swimming and long walks point to the coast; sailing and diving offer different activities on the water. Those interested in cultural heritage can explore several distinct themes, including the castle, Roman salt factory and Phoenician history. You can weigh these interests against one another rather than assuming they add up to a fixed daily itinerary.
