Twelve, seven or 43.5 kilometres: routes around Doña Inés vary in length and focus. You can explore the Ruta de Senderismo El Tornajo or the family-friendly Ruta Circular Cerro Pocico on foot; mountain bikers can choose a much longer circular route. The area also features dry-farming fields, distinctive places associated with water, and local festivals and traditions.

On Foot or by Mountain Bike

The Ruta de Senderismo El Tornajo is a 12 km circular walk near Doña Inés. At 7 km, the Ruta Circular Cerro Pocico is shorter and family-friendly. It starts at Plaza de Doña Inés and passes cereal and almond fields, Fuente del Pocico and Estanque de Doña Inés. This loop connects a starting point in the village with fields and two named places associated with water.

The Ruta MTB Peña María y Sierra Melgoso is a 43.5 km mountain biking circuit near Doña Inés. Its length clearly sets it apart from the two walking routes. It passes through the Las Vaeras wetland, where rare and endangered flora is protected. The route ends at Estanque de Doña Inés, where you may occasionally spot a grey heron fishing. This sighting cannot be reliably planned. Check local trail conditions before setting out on walks or bike rides.

Landscape, Water and Trails

Cerro del Tornajo near Doña Inés features gypsum-rich steppe, volcanic hills and rich biodiversity. The surrounding area includes extensive dry-farming fields with vineyards and olive groves. Water also shapes the natural environment: its hydrological features include the Ramblas Prado Jerez and Clavijo, the Don Juan Pedro and del Pocico springs, the de la Vareas spring, and the El Tornajo aquifer.

On a hike at Cerro del Tornajo, you can observe thousands of butterflies of various species, especially in spring, unless drought prevents this. The hill lies along the Caminos del Sol and Ruta del Argar walking routes and is an important stop on the Camino de Santiago route that starts in Lorca. This landscape brings nature watching together with several long-distance walking routes.

On 24 February 2025, the City of Lorca reported on a municipal initiative to protect a total of 920 hectares of the natural area around Cerro del Tornajo in the Pedanía Doña Inés. The area is described as being of ecological, landscape and heritage value. Fuente de los Cantos and the area behind the Molino are considered good sunset viewpoints; conditions and access may vary.

Traditions and History

The Ermita de San Isidro is dedicated to San Isidro, the patron saint of Doña Inés. Festivities in his honour include a Cucaña, a traditional Verbena, processions for San Isidro and the Virgen del Rosario, and performances by Cuadrillas. Dates may vary. Another local tradition is the Noche de la Pava, la Vela y el Candil: all the village’s electric lights are switched off, and people spend the night by candlelight and around fires, with music and dancing. The timing may vary here too.

Visitors to Doña Inés can visit craft workshops to learn more about local crafts. Confirm availability before visiting. The area’s earlier history includes stone tools found on the terraces of the Turrilla River near Doña Inés and dated to approximately 120,000–95,000 BC.
