In El Palmar, recurring religious festivals, a historically significant parish church and Parque de La Paz come together. Cycling routes and the regional landscapes of the Huerta de Murcia are also among the things you can take into account when planning your stay. The timing of your visit makes a particular difference: local festivals take place in June, October and December.

Festivals and Rosario de la Aurora

Rosario de la Aurora takes place on Sundays in October. It begins at 6:30 a.m. at the parish church of La PurĂsima. The image of the Virgen del Rosario is then carried in a procession, during which Ave Marias are sung. The religious programme also includes Masses and the recitation of the Holy Rosary. Procession details may vary from year to year; check the time and route locally before your visit.

The Campana de Auroros Nuestra Señora del Rosario de El Palmar was established in 1820 and legally incorporated on April 19, 1995. The two dates represent different milestones: the organisation’s beginnings and its subsequent legal incorporation.

The Fiestas Populares take place in the second half of June. The programme includes bonfires, a dance festival, dances, sporting competitions, fireworks, theatre performances and concerts, among other events. Check the exact dates and programme for the year you plan to travel. The Fiestas Patronales in honour of the PurĂsima ConcepciĂłn take place from December 1 to 8; a solemn procession is held on December 8. The programme for a given year may include additional dates beyond this period.

This gives you different options when choosing when to travel: June features a varied programme of festivities, October brings the Sunday Rosario tradition, and December offers the patronal festival and its procession. Check the dates against the calendar for your travel year.

Parish church and earlier history

The Iglesia parroquial de la Purísima Concepción was granted parish church status in 1614. The church displays historical sculptures of San Roque, the Virgen del Rosario, San José and San Antonio. Its parish history and these four named figures add a lasting cultural dimension to the religious festivals.

The archaeological site of La Paloma is thought to have been a small Roman settlement dating from the 2nd century BC. This is a probable historical interpretation, not a confirmed fact; the uncertainty is part of this classification.

Parque de La Paz: green space and sport

Parque de La Paz in El Palmar covers 17,300 square metres, has more than 300 trees and includes new shaded areas. The children’s area features climbing nets, a climbing wall, a slide, balance ropes and a swing for children with reduced mobility. As of August 25, 2020, Parque de La Paz also had a multi-purpose sports court for basketball and football; check current access before travelling there.

Park facilities may change. If you are specifically planning to use the children’s or sports area, check the current situation before your visit and access to the sports court before travelling there. This keeps your plans aligned with the facilities that are actually available during your visit.

The regional setting of El Palmar includes the El Valle y Carrascoy Regional Park, which encompasses the Sierra del Puerto and has been under regional protection since 1992. At the Majal Blanco estate in the heart of the Sierra del Puerto, there is a small group of large, centuries-old cork oaks. These regional features add a landscape dimension to the area’s history and festival calendar.
