Moratalla brings together architectural history, religious traditions and striking landscapes. The historic centre focuses on the fortress, manor houses and chapels; the Sendero Bolvonegro follows rivers to a gorge, and Revolcadores is a destination for mountain hikes. This lets you plan your trip according to your own interests, balancing culture and nature.

Fortress, Old Town and Views

Several historical periods can be seen at Castillo Fortaleza. The first Islamic structure was built around the 9th century over Neolithic and Iberian remains. In the 15th century, the Order of Santiago rebuilt the fortress. The Torre del Homenaje is an example of 15th-century Levantine military Gothic architecture. A monumental building with a basilica-style floor plan, vaulting and massive Tuscan columns was also planned for the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción.

The medieval historic centre can be explored on foot, with manor houses and chapels along the way. From the Mirador Plaza de la Iglesia, panoramic views extend over the Huerta of Moratalla, the old town and the surrounding sierras. An original 18th-century fountain there preserves its Cehegín jasper design: it is made of red, grey and black marble.

The Ermita, or Santuario Casa de Cristo, is six kilometres from the town centre. The building dates from the 17th century and is in the popular Baroque style. The sanctuary’s origins are associated with the reported apparition of Christ to the shepherd Rui Sánchez on 19 April 1493. The annual Romería in honour of the patron saint, Jesucristo Aparecido, takes place on the first Sunday in May. It proceeds from the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción to the Ermita Casa Cristo, carrying images of the patron saint and the Virgen de la Rogativa. The exact arrangements may vary.

Festivals and Cultural Heritage

The drums of Moratalla are recognised as a festival of regional tourist interest and are part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. During the Semana Santa drum processions, Tamboristas play with their faces concealed beneath a Capirote; their tunics are strikingly colourful. A permanent exhibition provides information about the drums and the “Encierros por Vereda”. If you are planning a visit specifically for this, check the current opening hours in advance.

A Centro de Interpretación features a short audiovisual presentation on the ground floor and a museographic exhibition programme on the upper floor, with an archive on rock art. The archive contains explanatory material about the UNESCO World Heritage recognition process. The exhibits thus complement the architectural and festival traditions with an insight into rock art.

Riverside Landscapes and Mountain Hikes

The landscape around the Sendero Bolvonegro is shaped by the river and the gorge. The trail follows the rivers to the Estrecho de Bolvonegro gorge and passes through a Natura 2000 Special Area of Conservation. In this area, the Alhárabe and Benamor rivers converge to form the River Moratalla. The distinction between the landscape themes can help you choose: here, the focus is on the watercourse and gorge.

Revolcadores, also known as Sierra Seca, offers a different natural setting. At 2,015 metres, the massif is the highest mountain in the Region of Murcia and is often used for mountain hikes, particularly on snowy days. Excursions to the massif may offer sightings of Iberian ibex, golden eagles, eagle owls and Spanish junipers, among other species. Bolvonegro and Revolcadores therefore offer different experiences: a river landscape and gorge on the one hand, and a high mountain massif and mountain hikes on the other.

Flowering aromatic plants also connect the landscape with agriculture. When the plants bloom, the landscape turns violet; flowering is also linked to the production of essential oils. The timing of the bloom varies.
