Villanueva Del Río Segura combines architectural history and art with views of the Segura River, the huertas and the surrounding mountains. The palace museum, the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and a town route through the old town offer different cultural highlights. The Ruta del Agua del Valle de Ricote also passes through the town. The August dates of the Romería and patron saint festivals may be a factor when choosing when to travel.

Architecture and Art

The Casa de Doña Isabel Baltasara palace was built at the beginning of the 19th century. It is a stately, two-storey building. The palace museum houses the largest painting collection in the Region of Murcia, which is significant for its historical value. The building and the collection thus highlight different aspects of history: one lies in the palace’s period of construction, the other in its art collection.

Another architectural landmark is the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. It was built in the 19th century to a design by Juan de Villanueva and is a notable example of neoclassical architecture. It is also listed as a BIC (Bien de Interés Cultural). The church may house one of the eight oil paintings created for the Guadalupe Monastery: “La Ascensión de la Virgen”. The painting is dated to 1694–1698. This possible date is significantly earlier than the church’s construction in the 19th century, providing an earlier chronological reference within the theme of church art.

Old Town and Views

The town route passes through the old town, with its monuments, the façades of grand houses and viewpoints overlooking the heart of the Valle de Ricote. It combines views of the built environment with vistas of the surrounding area. One specifically named viewpoint is the Mirador de San Roque: from there, the panorama stretches across Villanueva Del Río Segura, the Segura River, the huertas and the surrounding mountains.

The cultural landscape also shapes the view of the town: it includes fruit and citrus groves, with lemons particularly prominent. The El Corazón de Jesús sculpture stands on a hill and offers views across the valley. These broad landscape vistas and the agricultural surroundings complement the town’s architectural features.

August Dates to Keep in Mind

The traditional Romería de San Roque takes place every year on 13 August at the Ermita de San Roque. The Fiestas Patronales de San Roque y Virgen de la Asunción are celebrated from 13 to 17 August. The dates therefore differ: the Romería takes place on a single day in August, while the patron saint festivals last several days. If you would like to plan your trip around the Fiestas Patronales, check that year’s programme before you leave.

Route and El Golgo

The Ruta del Agua del Valle de Ricote passes through Villanueva Del Río Segura, providing a direct route connection to the town. Another point of interest is El Golgo, a former power station used for fishing. In summer, it is also used for swimming. Swimming conditions are seasonal; if you plan to swim there, check locally before your trip.
