At the Radul-Begov Konak, architectural history comes together with a glimpse of old Zaječar. The building dates from the late 18th century and preserves traditional Turkish architecture. Upstairs, an exhibition explores the city in earlier times—offering a tangible introduction to Zaječar’s cultural history.

Museums, Buildings and City History

The National Museum in Zaječar brings together departments of archaeology, history, art history and ethnology. Its permanent exhibitions are housed in the museum building and the Radul-Begov Konak. The collection comprises around 15,000 objects, including mosaics, sculptures and architectural decorations from Felix Romuliana. The museum is in the city centre, at 2 Dragoslava Srejovića Street. The collections and the historic konak thus offer two distinct ways to explore the past: through objects and through a building whose architecture is itself part of history.

The bastions also tell the story of Zaječar’s past. In the 19th century, they formed a ring-shaped military fortification system around the city. The Turkish Water Mill offers a different historical perspective: it is one of Zaječar’s oldest buildings and for two centuries ground wheat for residents and villages in the Timok region. The original icons in the Cathedral Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God were created by Georgije Bakalović of Karlovac.

The “Timok Region” Historical Archive uses its exhibitions to explain both its work and the importance of archival material to the public. Since its establishment, it has held more than 130 exhibitions. Its gallery is open for exhibition visits Monday to Friday during the institution’s working hours. Check the current opening times before your visit.

Theatre and Music as Part of City Life

The National Theatre of the Timok Region “Zoran Radmilović” has borne the actor’s name since 1991 and is considered a cultural centre of eastern Serbia. The traditional “Days of Zoran Radmilović” festival is also held at the theatre named after him. It runs for several days in October and brings together theatre performances from Serbia and abroad. If you want to plan your trip around a particular performance, check the dates for that year’s edition.

The Zaječar Guitar Festival offers a different perspective on music history. The festival has a tradition spanning more than five decades and features both competitions and concerts. Bands from abroad have also performed there; over the years, venues have included the sports hall and Timok Stadium. Together, the theatre and guitar festivals showcase different forms of live performance, from theatre productions to competitions and concerts.

Forest, Riverbanks and Activity

For outdoor exercise, consider Kraljevica Park Forest near the centre of Zaječar. It is used by people who play sports, seek relaxation or simply want to enjoy the forest air. The 1,000-metre “Sunčana staza” fitness trail also runs through the park: each of its five exercise stations has three pieces of training equipment. Its specific length and number of stations give the trail a different character from a walk by the water.

Popova Plaža lies directly on the Crni Timok, a five-minute walk from the city centre. A footpath runs along the entire length of the Timok riverside promenade; an evening stroll is especially appealing there during the summer months. Another option for sport is the Zaječar ski slope. It is 500 metres long, with an elevation difference of 82 metres. Floodlights are available for night skiing; facilities also include snowmaking equipment and a lift with a capacity of 1,173 skiers per hour. The riverside path, fitness trail and ski slope therefore differ not only in scenery but also in length and facilities.

Historic Destinations in the Wider Area

Nearby Felix Romuliana adds to the region’s late antique history: this fortified palace and memorial complex was built in the late 3rd and early 4th centuries and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2007. Further afield in the region, the Suvodol Monastery lies in the valley of the Selačka River and is one of Serbia’s oldest endowments. It is a convent and is visited for prayer by people from all over Serbia. Both places offer their own distinctive perspectives alongside Zaječar’s museums and buildings.
