Balta Berilovac lies at the foot of Stara Planina, 531 meters above sea level. Its school history, mills, and rural heritage give the village a cultural and historical focus; rivers and part of the protected nature park add a natural dimension to the description. For trip planning, it helps to distinguish between the cultural attractions in the village and the hiking and cycling routes in the wider Stara Planina area.

School History and Early Settlement

Archaeological finds and oral traditions indicate that the settlement already existed in Roman times. The first village school opened in a private home in 1860. The new school building was constructed in 1880 and officially opened in 1882. Classes were initially taught in Old Church Slavonic and later in Serbian. This allows three specific steps to be distinguished: the opening of the first school, the construction of a new building, and its official opening. The Muzej Stare planine Balta Berilovac is part of the Knjaževac Local History Museum complex.

Buildings and Mill Heritage

The Church of All Saints is part of the local vernacular heritage. It is a single-nave stone building; the ensemble also includes a wooden bell tower and a traditional house in the churchyard. The hamlet of Minići comprises four nearly identical houses from the early 20th century, which belong to the Morava house type. These examples draw attention to different aspects of rural architecture: the features of a church ensemble and the shared typology of a group of houses.

The historic mill building in Balta Berilovac houses a watermill, a fulling mill, and a wool carding workshop. Preserved working systems and a miller's residence are also part of the building. It therefore comprises several work areas and a residential section; these details complement the church and house architecture with traditional milling crafts. The grounds of the former school have a space for traditional shepherds' games.

Landscape and Routes

The Ćuštica and the Crnovrška flow through Balta Berilovac; their confluence forms the Trgoviški Timok. The territory of Balta Berilovac also includes part of the protected Stara Planina Nature Park in Protection Zone III. In the wider regional area around Babin Zub and Stara Planina, there are marked and developed hiking, mountain hiking, and cycling routes. The geographical scale is key when choosing: the rivers and protected area are local features, while the network of routes mentioned is in the wider mountain area.

Since ancient times, a route through Balta Berilovac crossed the Sv. Nikola Pass in Stara Planina and led to Vidin. This historic connection adds a route over the mountain pass to the architectural heritage. Separately, a section of State Road DP II-A No. 222 between Kalna and Jabučko ravnište lies within the cadastral area of Balta Berilovac. The route to Vidin describes a historic connection; the road reference locates a section within the cadastral area.

Events and Trip Planning

The grounds of the former school host the traditional ethno event “Molitva pod Midžorom” as well as other educational programs. The event is held annually in connection with Đurđevdan on May 6 and takes place in Vrtovac and Balta Berilovac; specific dates may vary from year to year. The part held in Balta Berilovac includes a cultural and artistic program. If you plan to include the event in your trip, check the specific dates in advance.
