Gamzigrad is best known for Felix Romuliana: the late Roman palace and memorial complex combines a clearly dated imperial history with an archaeologically structured site. The area also offers the history of technology surrounding HE Gamzigrad and the landscape along the Crni Timok. This gives you different options for planning your visit: Roman heritage, technology or nature.

Felix Romuliana: Palace, Memorial and Archaeological Site

Felix Romuliana was built in the late 3rd and early 4th centuries on the orders of Emperor Gaius Valerius Galerius Maximianus. In 2007, the site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. These two dates mark different chapters: the creation of the complex and its later recognition as a World Heritage Site.

The areas described within the site also differ. In the northern half is a well-preserved imperial palace with a small temple and an altar. To the south are the remains of a large temple with two crypts, as well as an ancient Roman bath. The contrast between the well-preserved palace and the southern remains makes the north-south layout a useful way to orient yourself around the archaeological complex.

The Felix Romuliana Interpretation Centre presents the site with 3D representations, animations and interactive multimedia offerings. If these interpretive resources are important for your visit, check in advance which options are currently available.

Magura and Other Links to History

About 1 km from the main entrance to Felix Romuliana, a memorial complex stands on Mount Magura. It comprises two mausoleums—one belonging to Galerius and one to Romula—as well as two consecration monuments in the form of enormous tumulus mounds. These mounds mark the place where an apotheosis ritual was performed for Galerius and his mother Romula. Magura thus adds its own memorial focus to the palace complex.

Another link to the archaeological site leads to Zaječar: the National Museum there holds Gamzigrad’s most important mosaics. In this way, the story of Roman heritage extends beyond the archaeological complex to the mosaics in the museum collection.

Local customs are also part of Gamzigrad’s history. At the 13th edition of the traditional Đurđevdanski sabor, held in Gamzigrad in May 2018, the custom “Promuz ovaca” was presented. If you would like to plan your stay around a festival, check the relevant event dates.

The History of Technology at the Hydroelectric Power Plant

HE Gamzigrad offers a different chapter in the area’s history. The hydroelectric power plant was built in 1909 and is one of the oldest in Serbia. It began operating on 1 November 1909, lighting the first electric light bulbs in the market square of Zaječar. This marks a striking contrast in time with the late Roman history of Felix Romuliana: here the focus is on electrification, while there it is on imperial antiquity. HE Gamzigrad is considered a unique museum-quality technical site.

The Crni Timok and Practical Planning

Near Gamzigrad, the Crni Timok forms large meanders whose landscape and recreational value is considered particularly high. The river is also used for sport fishing in the Gamzigrad area. The landscape and fishing offer a different focus from the archaeological and technological attractions. If you plan to go sport fishing, check the local conditions in advance.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Gamzigrad, a useful first step is to decide what you want to focus on during your stay: will it be primarily Roman heritage, or would you like to include more of the history of technology and the river landscape? When visiting Felix Romuliana, also consider how you will get there. There is no organised public transport to the archaeological site; visitors must arrange their own transport or use a local taxi.

If you would like to include the Bastionska transverzala, Felix Romuliana is checkpoint 4 on the route. Check the trail markers before setting out.
