Rtanj brings together a karst area in a nature reserve, Šiljak Peak and a tourist settlement at the foot of the mountain. The settlement of Rtanj lies at an elevation of 640 metres; the same name also refers to the mountain massif. When planning your trip, it is worth treating the settlement and the mountain as different points of reference: hiking and nature-related activities concern the massif, while the Gmitrović rural tourism household is explicitly located in the settlement.
Karst and Nature Reserve
Rtanj Special Nature Reserve covers a karst area with deep caves and a variety of karst features. In 2018, the Rtanj massif was declared a special nature reserve because of its endemic and relict flora and fauna, as well as the distinctive shape and composition of its terrain. The reasons for its protection therefore include biological features as well as the landscape’s form. Karst, caves and terrain add specific landforms to the information about its flora and fauna.
Jama Ledenica is a 50-metre-long ice cave on the southeastern side of Rtanj’s highest peak. It is considered the only ice cave in the karst of eastern Serbia. Its location places it at the peak, while the length refers to the cave itself; the description “only” applies to the karst of eastern Serbia.
Hiking and Recurring Ascents
Šiljak, Rtanj’s highest peak, is a hiking destination. A hiking route on Rtanj also lists two viewpoints: the first is 3.42 km from the starting point, and the second is 5.05 km away. Both distances are measured from the same starting point. The second viewpoint is therefore 1.63 km farther from the start than the first, making it possible to compare the two locations along the route.
Mountaineering associations organize two traditional ascents of Rtanj every year: the Christmas ascent and the Vidovdan ascent. These recurring dates provide a different planning reference from the distances to the viewpoints: here, the focus is on timing, while the distances indicate positions along a hiking route. If one of the ascents is relevant to your trip, check the date in advance.
Park Forest, Chapels and Cuisine
History is also reflected in specific places. Between the two world wars, a park forest covering around 40 hectares was established and landscaped on Rtanj. The park forest is home to the Rozarijum, a round stone structure with a glass dome that was covered in climbing roses. The park forest and the Rozarijum bring together a landscaped green space and a distinctive standalone structure.
The ruins of the Chapel of Saint George stand on Šiljak Peak. A memorial chapel on Rtanj was consecrated on 19 May 1934. The park forest, Rozarijum and chapels offer different cultural and historical points of interest alongside nature and hiking.
The culinary offering includes the Gmitrović rural tourism household in the settlement of Rtanj. Its restaurant serves a variety of homemade specialties. So, alongside the mountain and its historic sites, a specific restaurant in the settlement is also part of the Rtanj experience.
