Janja is part of the area around Babin Zub in the Budžak landscape. In the area associated with Janja, around the distinctive rock, there are marked trails and a protected natural landscape. Another point of interest is the remains of ancient fortifications near Janja and the traditional building methods used in the village.

Hiking between Babin Zub and Sveti Nikola

The Planinarski savez Srbije program for August 9, 2025, listed a circular route at Babin Zub about 5 km long, with a total ascent of 180 m. An August 2025 field report describes another hiking route that starts in Janja and leads to the Sveti Nikola Pass. It runs via Ravno Bučje and the former Kalna border station and has an elevation gain of just under 900 m. Comparing the elevation gains gives you a concrete point of reference when choosing between the two hikes.

Before hiking the route to the pass, check the trail markings and conditions locally. An August 2025 report noted that the pass could also be reached from Janja via Ravno Bučje in off-road vehicles. However, both access roads could be muddy and difficult to pass; conditions change seasonally. Check the conditions before setting out by vehicle.

Nature around Babin Zub

The area below Babin Zub is designated as a protected zone and nature park. Subalpine beech grows there, and the area is also home to numerous animal and plant species, including rare and protected species. Numerous springs around Babin Zub form the catchment area of the Trgoviški Timok. The distinctive Babin Zub rock is about 200 m high. These features give the landscape its varied character: a protected area, wooded expanses, springs and the rock itself.

Stara Planina Nature Park is designated a protected natural asset of exceptional importance and falls under protection category I. In the Stara Planina region, summer activities include walking on numerous trails, mountaineering, cycling, horse riding, and observing butterflies and birds. In the area associated with Janja around Babin Zub, there are marked and prepared trails for hiking, mountaineering and cycling.

Winter sports are also among the activities described for the area: it has a 12 km ski area with several ski lifts and cable cars. Before your trip, check whether it will be operating and whether snow conditions suit your travel dates. This lets you consider the summer activities and skiing as distinct seasonal options, rather than combining them into a single program.

Historical traces in Janja and Mezdreja

The remains of ancient fortifications near Janja are in the hamlet of Mezdreja, which belongs to Janja and lies on the road to Babin Zub. The described traces include visible walls made of rubble stone and mortar. These different materials give the remains of the fortifications a distinctive architectural character.

An account of a visit in September 2012 places a watermill near the center of Janja, by the Janjska reka. If you want to make a special trip to see the mill, check its current condition and access in advance.

Traditional building methods in Janja can also be seen in the materials used: they include stone foundations, rammed-earth walls, and timber structures with infill made of straw and clay. Stone, earth and wood each have a distinct role in this building tradition; the straw-and-clay infill complements the timber structures. Thus, alongside archaeological remains, traditional buildings offer another distinct aspect of the architectural heritage.
